Court of public opinion looms large in George Zimmerman murder trial

George Zimmerman listens to a jury consultant in court this week. Opening arguments in the murder trial will be??

On paper, Seminole County, Fla., criminal case No. 2012-001083-CFA is a second-degree murder trial, one that could send George Zimmerman to prison for life.

But in the court of public opinion, the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin has roused a national conversation about racial profiling, self-defense, gun control, vigilantism, civil rights and more.

A trial that speaks to something more than just the individuals involved is good for civic discourse, says Jason Johnson, a political science and communications professor at Hiram College in Ohio.

?That is a very good result of this case,? Johnson told Yahoo News. ?Depending on your demographics and your experience, there are different parts of this case that pop out to you.?

Opening arguments in the high-profile trial, which will be streamed live on Yahoo, begin at 9 a.m. ET Monday.

Zimmerman was a volunteer crime watchman in his gated Sanford, Fla., community when he shot and killed Martin during a scuffle on a dark neighborhood sidewalk in February 2012.

Minutes before the shooting, Zimmerman phoned police to report Martin, 17, as a suspicious person and, against the advice of a 911 dispatcher, continued to follow him through the neighborhood. Martin, a Miami high school student, had been at a nearby convenience store and was walking back to a family friend?s house where was he visiting.

Zimmerman, who is of mixed heritage and self-identifies as Hispanic, says he shot Martin in self-defense. He maintains that the teen attacked him, pounded his head into the pavement and tried to get his holstered handgun. Martin died at the scene from a single gunshot to the chest. Sanford police didn?t initially arrest Zimmerman, who suffered a bloody nose and head lacerations in the fight.

While no one witnessed the confrontation, Martin had been on his cellphone with his girlfriend shortly before the scuffle. The woman, identified in court records as Witness No. 8, could provide key testimony for the state's argument that Zimmerman pursued Martin. A neighbor heard the pair fighting and was on the phone with 911 when the fatal shot was fired. Faint screaming is heard in the background of the call. Prosecutors say it was Martin. Zimmerman says it was him. On Friday, Judge Debra Nelson is expected to rule if audio experts will be allowed to testify.

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the parents of Trayvon Martin, listen as the charges against George Zimmerman??

Many viewed the early lack of charges against Zimmerman as unequal justice for a black victim. More than 2 million people signed an online Change.org petition demanding ?Justice for Trayvon Martin,? and demonstrators protested in Sanford and elsewhere across the country. President Barack Obama drew criticism from some when he addressed the tragedy during a public briefing in the White House Rose Garden.

?All of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen,? Obama said 19 days before Zimmerman was eventually charged by a special prosecutor assigned to take over for local police.

?But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon. And I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.?

Johnson, the professor, says the president?s remarks proved to be pivotal.

?That?s when we knew that this case was going to be about more than this particular kid getting killed,? Johnson says. ?It was going to be about notions of violence, and respect, and profiling in America in general.?

These issues have nothing to do with Martin?s death, says Robert Zimmerman, George?s father. He recently released an e-book titled, ?Florida v. Zimmerman: Uncovering the Malicious Prosecution of My Son.?

?Every attempt was made to portray the events as a white, racist, neighborhood watch volunteer stalking, pursuing, and then murdering a little black boy simply getting candy for his little brother,? Robert Zimmerman writes in the book. ?Absolutely none of this portrayal was at all accurate, and clearly known not to be true by individuals involved.?

Zimmerman, himself a former judge, contends prosecutors are on a ?politically motivated witch hunt? fueled by ?race-baiters? seeking fortune and fame.

?A wholly justified and necessary action by George turned into a national issue,? he writes. ?What Americans have been told by the media for well over a year will finally be exposed and the truth presented. The egregious and self serving conduct of the Scheme Team, prosecutors, and others will hopefully be fully exposed.?

According to public documents, an FBI investigation didn't uncover any evidence that Martin?s death was motivated by race. However, Johnson said the case still has racial components that can?t be overlooked.

?Race is a lot more nuanced than we often report and discuss in public discourse,? he said. ?This is one of those cases that?s going to demonstrate how nuanced it really is.?

While the country debates the role race played, Sanford continues to heal from the community unrest. For several months, many of the town?s clergy have been gathering with federal and local mediators to share their congregation?s concerns.

Next week they?ll play peacekeepers at the trial. Four seats in the courtroom are set aside for local ministers, while other pastors plan to mingle among spectators outside the courthouse.

Total amount of exercise important, not frequency, research shows

June 20, 2013 ? A new study by Queen's University researchers has determined that adults who accumulated 150 minutes of exercise on a few days of the week were not any less healthy than adults who exercised more frequently throughout the week.

Ian Janssen and his graduate student Janine Clarke studied 2,324 adults from across Canada to determine whether the frequency of physical activity throughout the week is associated with risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

"The findings indicate that it does not matter how adults choose to accumulate their 150 weekly minutes of physical activity," says Dr. Janssen. "For instance, someone who did not perform any physical activity on Monday to Friday but was active for 150 minutes over the weekend would obtain the same health benefits from their activity as someone who accumulated 150 minutes of activity over the week by doing 20-25 minutes of activity on a daily basis."

Physical activity was measured continuously throughout the week by having research participants wear accelerometers on their waists. Accelerometers are tiny electrical devices (about the size of a small package of matches) that record how much a person moves every minute.

Dr. Janssen divided the adults who met the physical activity guidelines (more than 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity) into those who were frequently active (active five to seven days of the week) and infrequently active (active one to four days of the week).

"The important message is that adults should aim to accumulate at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity in whatever pattern that works for their schedule."

FOOTBALL Hollys Papuga ready to cap off amazing year in MHSFCA All-Star Game

Holly HS's Page All Football Stories When looking at his week among high school football stars, Holly High School graduate Evin Papuga is seeing the glass half-full.

?I can?t name a thing that?s going wrong,? he said.

And what could be going wrong? As the first person ever from Holly to be selected to play in the Michigan High School Football All-Star Game, Papuga is looking forward to showing off his skills on Saturday in front of family and Broncho fans.

Practically serving as a Mr. Do-it-all on his team, this game is just another one of his accomplishments in his thrilling senior year. When looking back all the way to the fall, Papuga has one distinct memory from the gridiron that will not leave him for a while.

?We won the Metro League title, and it came down to the last game of the season,? Papuga said.

That title-winning game will hardly be his last, as he signed to become a Huskie when he attends Michigan Tech in the fall. While he enjoyed interacting with the coaching staff, the atmosphere around Michigan Tech is what did him in.

?I went up there and immediately fell in love with it,? Papuga said. ?I?m an outdoors guy, and it was just really scenic up there.?

Before Papuga straps up for the Huskies, he will be playing his last high school game this Saturday at Grand Valley State University.

Daniels: 'Dumb and Dumber To' is 'painfully funny'

(AP) ? Nearly 20 years after "Dumb and Dumber" was released, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are reuniting for "Dumb and Dumber To."

Daniels said Carrey approached directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly two years ago about doing a sequel.

"Jim has been against all sequels, and you know, understandably so. ... But he turned 50 and that will mellow you out, and suddenly he's going, 'Let's have some fun. ... Come on,' and we're going, 'Great,' and so the Farrellys said, 'This isn't a money grab. Let's really write a great second movie that takes the original and then blows it up even further, and so I think they did that," Daniels said in an interview Wednesday.

Universal Pictures, which acquired the domestic distribution rights after Warner Bros. dropped out, confirmed the sequel.

"It's taken two years to get the studios and all that stuff worked out," Daniels said. "The easiest thing to say in Hollywood is 'no.' You keep your job if you say 'no.' If you say 'yes' and you're not right, you lose your job. There's a lot of 'no.' And we had a lot of 'no' for two years and finally 'yes,' it's comin' around, and I think it's got a chance to be I hope better than the first one."

Daniels said he's read the script and calls it "painfully funny."

The original premise wasn't that deep. It followed two well-meaning but moronic friends, Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels), as they traveled cross-country to find the owner of a briefcase filled with money.

"We're middle-aged and still that stupid. Our IQ has not gone up one point combined," he said. "So it's a frightening thing. You're gonna see the two of us standing there trying to put thoughts together and you want to put underneath, 'Kids don't do this at home.' It's that stupid."

Daniels, 58, is known for his critically acclaimed roles in "The Squid and the Whale" and "The Purple Rose of Cairo."

He stars as a cable news anchor in the HBO series "The Newsroom," which returns for its second season on July 14.

Daniels said he's always surprised by the people who approach him about his "Dumb" role.

"To have what you would think (would) be very smart, intelligent people come up to you (and say), 'Can I talk to you for a second? Don't tell anybody but 'Dumb and Dumber' (is) unbelievable.' I get that a lot."

Yahoo Buying Tumblr for $1.1 Billion | Hawaii Reporter

The deal, announced Monday, is a bold bet by Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer to revitalize the company by co-opting a Web property with strong visitor traffic, but little revenue.

Yahoo made clear it was sensitive to concerns that it might damage Tumblr by making it less irreverent or more corporate.

?Per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business,? Yahoo said in a statement.

The acquisition, which will use up about a fifth of Yahoo's $5.4 billion in cash and marketable securities, is the largest by far since Mayer took the reins in July with the goal of reversing a long decline in Yahoo's business and Web traffic.

Analysts said Yahoo appeared to be overpaying for a business that might not contribute to revenue for years, but said that Yahoo had to do something to plug a hole in its social media efforts.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney called it a ?long-shot/long-term investment? but one that fits into Mayer's turnaround strategy.

?[Yahoo's] fundamentals have been subpar for numerous years, in part because of the company's missing presence in Social and Mobile. Tumblr may help [Yahoo] develop that presence,? Mahaney said in a note.

Tumblr is one of the Web's most popular hubs of so-called user-generated content, drawing young people who use the platform to post pictures and text. Tumblr has more than 100 million blogs in its network, ranging from ?White Men Wearing Google Glass? to housing-focused ?The Worst Room.?

Though Yahoo remains one of the Web's most popular destinations, it has seen its revenue shrink in recent years as consumers and advertisers favor rivals such as Google and Facebook. The deal is expected to increase Yahoo's audience by 50 percent.

Rich premium

While Tumblr is certainly popular - it has tens of millions of monthly unique visitors - analysts questioned what kind of contribution it will make to Yahoo revenue, since advertising on the site is in its nascent stages.

Media reports have pegged Tumblr's 2012 revenue at $13 million. The privately held company, based in Manhattan, does not disclose its financial results.

Yahoo expects that Tumblr will help boost revenue by 2014, Ken Goldman, Yahoo's chief financial officer, said on a call with analysts. He did not provide specific numbers.

?Even if revenue was $100 million, it means Yahoo paid 10 times revenue,? said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis. ?Ten times is what you pay to date the belle of the ball. It's on the outer bands of M&A.?

Yahoo could quickly boost Tumblr's revenue by combining the website with its own sales force, said Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser. Loading Tumblr up with banner ads risks alienating its users, however, and probably wouldn't provide a significant lift to Yahoo's overall revenue, he said.

?It's not clear that this deal will be favorable from a return-on-capital perspective,? Wieser said. ?One billion [dollars] for one company is a big bet.?

Gillis and Wieser were contacted on Sunday after the deal was reported by the online publication All Things D.

Mayer, on the conference call, described the Tumblr deal as an exception and said Yahoo was not necessarily planning lots of similarly sized deals.

Yahoo is one of several companies that have coughed up considerable money for buzz-worthy start-ups that hold promise. Facebook bought the popular social media photo site Instagram for $1 billion last year. In 2006, Google paid $1.6 billion for YouTube.

Shares of Yahoo rose as much as 2 percent in early trading Monday, but later fell back. They were up 18 cents to $26.70 in late-morning dealings. Through Friday's close, the shares had risen 70 percent since Mayer became CEO.

Image issues

One question Yahoo may have to address is Tumblr's reputation as a home for pornographic blogs. At one point in 2009, about 80 percent of Tumblr's top sites had something to do with adult content. Today that number is closer to 5 percent, according to Quantcast data, but the image lingers.

Mayer said on the call that Yahoo's targeting tools would allow advertisers to zero in on specific demographics and content.

One area where Yahoo plans to ramp up advertising: Tumblr's dashboard, the main landing point, akin to a newsfeed.

Dealing with that and other issues may fall to David Karp, 26, who founded Tumblr in 2007 and will remain CEO.

Karp, a self-taught programmer who left high school in favor of home schooling, did not take part in Mayer's conference call. Media reports have suggested his take in the billion-dollar sale would top $200 million.

In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Karp seemed to be less interested in money than in Tumblr's prominence.

?There are a lot of rich people in the world. There are very few people who have the privilege of getting to invent things that billions of people use,? he said.

Microsoft unveils its next-generation Xbox One game console ...

Microsoft unveiled its next-generation Xbox, the Xbox One, this morning at an even on its campus.

The company?s aim is to usher in the next-generation of entertainment, using games as the Trojan horse into broader control of the living room. More than eight years in the making, the new machine represents the company?s ambitions to become the most important gaming and entertainment company in the world.

?Ladies and gentlemen, the Xbox One,? said Don Mattrick, head of Microsoft?s game business.

The system turns on in an instant with your voice commands.

It will be interesting to see the reception for it. The world has changed since Microsoft last introduced its Xbox 360 game console in 2005. Apple?s iPhone ushered in a new era of smartphones and tablets that are contenders for the leisure time of consumers. Microsoft has acknowledged this changing landscape and is making the new Xbox more connected than ever.

Nicknamed the Xbox 720, the new machine?s most direct competition will be the Sony PlayStation 4, which is expected to debut in November, as well as the Nintendo Wii U, a less-powerful system that is struggling to gain a foothold in the market. New game consoles typically sell millions at the outset, but Nintendo sold only 3.45 million units in its first five months.

Source: GamesBeat

The Xbox One?s revamped Kinect sensor.

Microsoft sold an estimated 77 million Xbox 360 game consoles during the current generation of hardware. Sony sold about the same, while Nintendo has sold 99 million Wiis. But Microsoft has dominated the charts of consoles sold and game sales for the past couple of years, and companies like Electronic Arts are betting heavily that it will be a leader in the next generation alongside Sony?s PlayStation 4.

Those results are far better than anyone ever expected from Microsoft, which was fundamentally a software company entering the hardware business back in 2001. With the original Xbox, Microsoft moved too slowly. It sold about 25 million units, beating Nintendo?s underpowered GameCube. But it was trounced by Sony?s PlayStation 2, which sold more than 150 million units in its lifetime.

Microsoft essentially moved from zero percent market share in 2000 to 12 percent market share in 2006 in the hardware business. And as the market currently stands, Microsoft has about 30 percent of the hardware unit market, compared to 30 percent for Sony and 40 percent for Nintendo. But in dollars, Microsoft?s share is higher than that, as Wii game sales slowed down dramatically in the last couple of years. Now the company plans to complete its conquest of video games in the coming generation.

The machine has an?accelerated processing unit (APU) chip from Advanced Micro Devices. AMD, which also makes the?APU for the PS4, is making a semi-custom chip for Microsoft, using eight processing cores, or computing brains, based on?Jaguar?micro-architecture?designs. The chip will combine graphics and processing on the same sliver of silicon, and it represents a shift away from IBM?s three-core Power chips that were used in the ?previous Xbox 360 game console.

Microsoft and Sony will likely distinguish itself based on the number of cores they will have in each chip. Sony has eight Jaguar cores in its chip, and it also has a special kind of graphics memory that will speed the transfer of data within the chip. Durango has an eight-core 64-bit APU running at 1.6GHz, with 8GBs of DDR3 main memory and a large hard disk. Microsoft?s machine has similar capabilities on the semiconductor level, but its games may not run as fast as Sony?s in part because Microsoft is expected to dedicate some of its performance to running?Kinect 2.

Kinect 2?is expected to be a more accurate version of the Kinect motion-sensing system that Microsoft launched in 2010. That system enabled players to control their games with gestures, rather than controllers, using body movements. But it wasn?t particularly accurate, and you had to stand in a sweet spot about 10 feet away from the console. With more processing power dedicated to the motion-sensing tasks, Microsoft will be able to make Kinect 2 more accurate and cover a wider area. Kinect 2 is expected to ship as standard on the new box, with better accuracy, improved voice recognition, a better camera, and dedicated hardware processing. If the latter is true, it will make the box more expensive to make. But the tax on processing power may not be as great.
