Obama in Denver: Colorado takes shape as key state for 2012

Obama pitched his jobs bill Tuesday to a largely Hispanic audience at a Denver high school. Colorado residents should expect to see lots more of the president in coming months.

When President Obama spoke in a Denver high school Tuesday, he pushed a familiar topic: why Congress needs to pass his jobs bill.

It's hardly surprising that the president brought his jobs initiative to Colorado. Residents of the Centennial State should expect to see a lot more of the president in coming months, as his reelection campaign gets underway.

Once a solidly red state (from World War II through 2004, it voted for just two Democrats: Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton), Colorado went for Mr. Obama in '08. And Obama needs to win the state again next year, though his status in the Rocky Mountains is now far less certain.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and his predecessor Bill Ritter ? both Democrats ? have spoken recently about how difficult a repeat of 2008 will be for the president in this state. Not that a win is impossible, but that it will be a tough fight.

One Obama economic adviser, speaking to Politico, labeled Colorado the "bellwether of bellwethers," and at a recent Denver training event, Obama field director Jeremy Bird told volunteers that of the possible electoral configurations that give Obama a win in 2012, "none of those scenarios doesn't include Colorado."

In his remarks at Abraham Lincoln High School Tuesday, Obama wasn't necessarily reaching out to the independent voters he needs to carry the state. Rather, he tried to shore up his base, hitting familiar themes and speaking to a largely Hispanic audience on Denver's Southwest side.

"The Obama campaign is using Abraham Lincoln as a backdrop to send a message that goes far beyond Colorado," Eric Sondermann, a Denver-based political analyst, told the Denver Post. He called Obama's message two-fold: "a speech about jobs to an enthusiastic audience made up largely of brown faces."

Obama also used the school backdrop to highlight one item in his jobs bill: $25 billion that would go toward rebuilding and modernizing dilapidated schools across the country.

"The science labs here at Lincoln High were built decades ago, back in the ?60s," Obama said, referring to Lincoln as "the fastest-growing school in one of the fastest-growing school districts in Colorado."

"I don?t know if you?ve noticed," he said, "but science and technology has changed a little bit since the 1960s."

In a speech punctuated by applause, he also reiterated his controversial "Buffett rule" tax proposal, which would raise certain tax rates for Americans earning more than $1 million. And he hammered home the importance of his jobs bill, saying it "will lead to new jobs for construction workers, jobs for teachers, jobs for veterans, jobs for young people, jobs for the unemployed. It will provide tax relief for every worker and small business in America. And by the way, it will not add to the deficit."

It's pretty much the same message he touted in recent trips to Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana ? all swing states like Colorado that can expect to see a lot more of their president in the coming year.

Castroneves fined $30,000 for Twitter comments (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves called IndyCar race director Brian Barnhart a "circus clown" during a Twitter rant last week and that cost him $30,000 on Tuesday.

The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner was fined and put on probation after complaining about a penalty imposed on the final lap at Japan, making him the first driver in series history to be disciplined for comments posted on Twitter.

And it was there on the social network that he responded to Tuesday's fine.

"At this point, I think it's best to just put this situation behind me and move forward," he wrote. "We have a big race this weekend and my focus now is getting back on track and behind the wheel of the No. 3 Team Penske car as we try to defend our win from last season at Kentucky Speedway."

In Japan, Barnhart dropped Castroneves from seventh to 22nd place after he made a pass under yellow. The driver acknowledged his maneuver was illegal but said he should've received a one-spot penalty.

When Castroneves learned of the penalty, the television broadcast had already ended, so he used Twitter to voice his opinion.

"Making the famous (at)paultracy's words mine: Brian Barnhart is a circus clown!" Castroneves wrote in a series of posts. "Very disappointed for finishing 7th and being put to 22nd. This is just ABSURD !!!"

He also called Barnhart inconsistent because he penalizes some drivers and not others, changes the rule book when its convenient and blamed Barnhart for "bringing down an entire series."

Castroneves can pay off the fine without digging into his wallet, working it off through public appearances for the series. He also can appeal.

The gregarious Brazilian is one of IndyCar's most familiar faces, but it's been a bleak season.

He has won at least one race each year since 2001 but still has not won in 2011. He's led only 34 laps and has blamed his misfortunes on bad luck and poor judgment.

Off the track, things haven't gone much better.

The man who once beat the IRS in court could face a legal rematch after government officials filed a civil claim in U.S. Tax Court in May. They contend he owes more than $6 million in taxes and penalties.

Castroneves will get two more chances at a victory this season ? Sunday at Kentucky and Oct. 16 at Las Vegas. And that's what he intends to do.

"It's important for us to end the season on a positive note," he wrote Tuesday on Twitter. "So we will be doing our best to get back to Victory Lane this weekend and at the finale in Las Vegas."

'Trigger law' gives parents power in public schools

On its face, the idea sounds so simple: if a school is persistently failing, give parents the power to change it. But the reality of putting that notion into practice is proving challenging, at best.

In the last two years, California, Texas and Mississippi have passed so-called "parent trigger" laws. In each, the law stipulates that if at least 51 percent of the parents of children enrolled in a school sign a petition, they can trigger change. The laws vary in terms of the specifics, but in general, the new law allows parents at persistently failing schools to fire the teachers and principal, and in some cases, turn the school into a charter school instead. Twenty-two other states are considering giving parents the same kind of power.

But there is strong opposition to the laws from teachers' unions. They argue parents don't have the experience that career educators do to make big policy changes.

So far, the law has only been put to the test once, in Compton, Calif., and it has sparked a battle. Hundreds of parents signed a petition to turn McKinley Elementary into a charter school. Parents say they had good reasons. Less than half their kids were meeting state standards in math and reading.

For Marlene Romero, enough was enough. "I feel like my son wasn't at the level of learning he was supposed to be," she said. Even teachers were warning her. "One of the teachers told me, 'If I was you, I'd take my son out of this school,'" she said.

But the school is challenging the petition, saying the signatures were obtained improperly and are therefore invalid. The case is now in court, and there are bitter feelings on both sides. The California Federation of Teachers went so far as to call the parent trigger law "lynch mob" legislation.

Backers of the "parent trigger" laws say they were born as a way to give parents the right to intervene if the system to which they entrust their children is in a downward spiral. The laws offer a way to vent anger and frustration, and effect real change, they say.??

But there is a learning curve. Proponents are now out campaigning to remind parents the laws have to be about more than just signing a petition and hoping the rest will take care of itself. They argue the trigger attempt should be a starting point for parents to organize, rally, meet and educate themselves. They've even started handing out what they call a Parent Power Handbook, a slim pocket-size notebook with hints about how parents can stay involved and remain active in the day-to-day operations of their children's school.

The "trigger" laws do give thousands of parents what they've been wanting: more input in the education of their own children. But the price of that power is that parents have to take on more responsibility, too.

Solyndra leaders invoke 5th Amendment at hearing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Top executives from a bankrupt California solar energy company declined to testify before a congressional hearing investigating their half-billion dollar government loan.

Solyndra Inc. CEO Brian Harrison and the company's chief financial officer, Bill Stover, both invoked their Fifth Amendment right to decline to testify to avoid self-incrimination.

Harrison told the House Energy and Commerce Committee Friday: "On advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer any questions."

Stover did the same.

Lawmakers from both parties said they were disappointed, but said that silence from the two executives would not stop them from pursuing their investigation into a $528 million loan that Solyndra Inc. received from the Energy Department in 2009.

The panel's chairman, Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., compared the Solyndra loan to the Great Train Robbery in England in the 1960s.

"It appears we have a great heist of over half a billion dollars and ... maybe even co-conspirators called the U.S. government," Upton said.

Upton faulted the Obama administration for its role in the loan, saying at a minimum the Energy Department did not complete due diligence on the company, which lost hundreds of millions of dollars in the years before the loan was approved.

He called the loan "reckless use of taxpayer dollars on a company that was known to pose serious risks before a single dime went out the door."

Meanwhile, fallout from the Solyndra controversy continued. A solar company slated to get a separate Energy Department loan guarantee said Friday it has been told the guarantee will not be approved in time to meet a federal deadline.

The Energy Department said earlier this month it would provide a partial guarantee for a $344 million loan to San Mateo, Calif.-based SolarCity to install solar panels on 160,000 homes across 124 military bases in 33 states.

But SolarCity said in a letter to Congress Friday that the project now appears to be dead. "In the past 48 hours, DOE has informed us ... they will be unable to finalize the loan guarantee" by Sept. 30, the company said in a letter to Upton and other committee leaders. "The reason provided was the increased documentation requirements that are the result of the current congressional investigation into the Solyndra bankruptcy."

SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive called his company a victim of Solyndra, and urged Congress to extend the Sept. 30 deadline by a few weeks to allow his project and others to move forward. DOE has said as many as 14 projects worth a total of nearly $9 billion face the Sept. 30 deadline.

"It's a shame to pull the plug on this project just because of the Solyndra bankruptcy," Rive said.

An Energy Department official confirmed that the SolarCity project would not close by Sept. 30, but would not say the reason.

Spokesman Damien LaVera said in an email that the department has consistently said it will not close any deal until rigorous technical, legal and financial reviews have been completed.

"Failure to close a loan application does not indicate that a project doesn't have merit or a strong business case to succeed, but rather that all of the extensive due diligence and legal documentation simply cannot be completed by September 30," LaVera said.

The Energy Department has requested additional funding for the loan program in the budget year that begins Oct. 1. "If Congress provides those funds, additional projects can be considered based upon the availability of that funding," LaVera said.

Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said it was important for the committee's investigation of Solyndra to continue.

"The American people deserve answers. Half a billion dollars is missing," he said.

GOP lawmakers said they were expanding their inquiry into the Solyndra loan, which has become a rallying point for Republican critics of the administration's push for so-called green jobs.

Lawmakers said they want the administration to turn over all communications between the Energy Department and White House related to Solyndra, as well as all communications between Energy and the Treasury, which lent Solyndra the money.

Committee leaders said the administration may have violated the law when it restructured Solyndra's loan in February in such a way that private investors moved ahead of taxpayers for repayment in case of default. The economic stimulus law provides for taxpayers to be ahead of other creditors in the event of bankruptcy or default.

Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman said Thursday that the restructuring was "entirely legal," noting that another aspect of the law requires Energy Secretary Steven Chu and other officials to protect the overall interests of taxpayers. Poneman said the restructuring accomplished that because it gave the struggling company a better chance to succeed.

Solyndra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month and laid off its 1,100 employees.

The Fremont, Calif.-based company was the first renewable-energy company to receive a loan guarantee under a stimulus-law program to encourage green energy and was frequently touted by the Obama administration as a model. President Barack Obama visited the company's Silicon Valley headquarters last year, and Vice President Joe Biden spoke by satellite at its groundbreaking ceremony.

Since then, the company's implosion and revelations that the administration hurried Office of Management and Budget officials to finish their review of the loan in time for the September 2009 groundbreaking has become an embarrassment for Obama as he tries to sell his new job-creation program.

Recap of What We Know About Health and Fitness and How You ...

Let?s take some time today to do a quick recap of some of the things that we, health and fitness enthusiasts, already know.

1. Eat a variety of whole, colorful foods.
2. Drink lots of water.
3. Make the majority of your meals at home.
4. Plan ahead and bring food with you.
5. Move around throughout the day.
6. Stretch daily.
7. Challenge yourself physically.
8. Listen to your body.

Right, so these are the things that we hear over and over, again and again. Whether we choose to do them or not, this stuff we know.

So, then wait, if we know this, then that makes some other things sort of clear as well. Let?s take these 3 points from the list, and examine them a bit further:

• Eat a variety of whole, colorful foods.
• Make the majority of your meals at home.
• Listen to your body.

If you are shopping the exterior of the grocery store, i.e. produce, the meat and fish counter, the egg and dairy refrigerated case, or at the farmers market and eating primarily whole food meals that you make at home, then that means:

1. You really aren?t eating that many packaged foods.
2. You know everything that is going into the food that you eat.
3. And since you understand proper portions and you probably aren?t using heaping spoonfuls of salt or putting in any ingredients with names that you can?t pronounce? then you don?t need to be afraid of eating the wrong things and you don?t need to be scared of sodium, fat, preservatives, etc.

In fact, you can feel pretty good about what you eat and know that you are doing great things for your body and your long-term health.

And further, if you know all of this stuff already, then that means that you don?t need to research and read every article that is put in front of your face related to what to eat.

You can actually give yourself a break, and start spending less time reading the latest data, and spend more time experimenting and finding out first-hand what is true for you rather than some group of people you don?t even know, who may or may not be anything like you.

Eating healthy is pretty basic, and sometimes for the sake of having something to talk about? the media makes it seem much more difficult than it really is.

If you?re reading this and you?re thinking, ?I know some of this stuff, but I don?t feel confident enough yet to go at it on my own,? then find a trusted source or two or three, read what they have to say, and then put the book down and make some decisions for yourself on the best plan for you.

It?s great to be educated, but sometimes education can go too far and get you way more confused than focused.

Listen, you?re not going to mess it up. In fact, the only way to really learn what works for you is to just do something and then pay attention and then keep doing it if it gets you the results you want, or do something else.

That leads to our next point.

Your stress level and your beliefs are far more powerful than the actual food that you eat or exercise that you perform.

We?re sure you?ve heard of the placebo effect. It?s the perfect example of how the mind is far more powerful than we give it credit for. If we believe something, then the odds are pretty good that we are going to experience things that match up with our belief.

So before you start swearing off dairy, gluten, peanuts, and so on? think about this.

It?s interesting how there?s always a new thing to avoid or be scared of that ?experts? are saying is the culprit for digestive issues or health issues in general. It was fat, then it was carbs? there have also been peanut allergies, then dairy allergies, and now gluten allergies and we?re not saying that these allergies are false, we?re just saying that sometimes when something is painted to be ?true? in the media and it gets a lot of attention, it?s easy to fall prey to thinking that must be true for you too.

Wouldn?t it be interesting if at some point science takes a step back and says:

Hey, wait a minute, there?s something that we may not be factoring into all this research and data? stress. The vast majority of society is stressing and worrying and busy and not really listening to their body?just pushing their body to go go go.

What if it?s not the food that is causing these issues?

What if it?s the underlying stress that is showing up physically or as an allergy right now, but with proper care, rest, and stress reductions? these symptoms would go away on their own?
