Inside a landmark church on the West Side, volunteers pass out hundreds of bags of food twice a month to the disabled, working parents and children ? all desperate to make ends meet.
It has been an outreach of El Divino Salvador United Methodist Church for 17 years, growing from five families receiving food monthly to more than 150 people.
A VIA bus stop fronting the church at Zarzamora Street and Woodlawn Avenue has made the food ministry a popular and accessible site for people across the city. They gather as early as three hours before the 9 a.m. opening, some using walkers or in wheelchairs, and others pushing strollers with infants.
?No money can replace the feeling you get or the expressions you see on those people's faces,? said pantry director Lali Saucedo. ?When you see that smile on that child's face after you give them a bag of cookies or a little treat, you can't describe it.?
The church food pantry is one of the area nonprofits showcased during the holiday season as part of the Express-News' 17th annual Grace of Giving series.
The program relies on a church building constructed in 1927 and in need of repairs.
There are cracks in the walls, asbestos in the floor tiling and mildew forming on the second-floor ceiling tiles where water is leaking through.
The food stored on the second floor was moved into the main distribution room and placed on shelving. That room now is crowded, making operational space much smaller for the 10 to 12 volunteers who support the pantry.
The church is studying how to repair the leak on a $192,000 annual budget funded primarily by aging congregants.
A decade ago, the church had about 250 regular attendees. Most Sundays now, about 100 are in the pews.
But church leaders said they're determined to keep the pantry open on the first and third Tuesday of each month, even though it has added 660 clients in the past year for a total of more than 2,600.
It receives cash donations from the church, then buys food from the San Antonio Food Bank. The pantry also gets direct food donations from church members.
Four bags went to Tom McDowall, who waited in line on a cold December morning as a first-time recipient of help. McDowell, an owner of a foundation repair company, said a stroke a year ago wiped out most of his income.
?It's humbling,? he said. ?I'm calling the groups that used to work for me so I can ask them for work.?

Pittsburgh, PA, United States (AHN Sports) ? Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby has undergone light workouts but his return remains unknown as he struggles to overcome concussion symptoms, coach Dan Bylsma reported Wednesday.
Bylsma said during Wednesday?s practice Crosby is still experiencing concussion symptoms despite performing light workouts.
Crosby has been sidelined with concussion symptoms since the Penguins? loss to the Boston Bruins on Dec. 5.
It remains unknown if the symptoms are due to a new injury or the concussion that sidelined the Penguins star for 10 months.
Crosby made his return from his previous bout with concussion on Nov. 21, recording two goals and two assists in a win against the New York Rangers.

(NewsCore) - A teenage boy was stabbed to death Monday on Britain's busiest shopping street as bargain hunters flocking to post-Christmas sales looked on in horror.
The 18-year-old was attacked inside a branch of Foot Locker, sources told Sky News.
He staggered out of the store and collapsed on central London's Oxford Street, where he was pronounced dead, reports said.
The chilling incident was one of two knife attacks that took place as the iconic shopping destination was teeming with bargain-hunting Britons, who had already spent an estimated ?15 million ($23 million) in the first three hours of post-Christmas trading.
A large swath of the one and a half mile (2.5km) thoroughfare was closed after the first attack at 1:45pm local time, causing chaos in surrounding streets and prompting some stores to close early.
As a section of Oxford Street remained taped off Monday evening, reports surfaced of a second incident in which another man was stabbed near the junction with Regent Street, another landmark London address.
He was taken to the hospital with a leg wound but was expected to survive, police told Sky.
London's Metropolitan Police said approximately 10 people were arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing but the victim's identity has not been disclosed.
There have so far been no arrests in connection with the second attack and it is not known if the two are linked.
Detectives will now comb through hours of surveillance video from the numerous security cameras positioned around Oxford Street, which is crammed with around 300 stores.
They also have potentially hundreds of witnesses to question.
The killing comes just days after the release of retro Nike Air Jordan sneakers sparked scuffles and near-riots in shoe stores across America Friday.

But just as I was about to press END...I heard "PET AMBER ALERT...PET AMBER ALERT!" ?So I listened and found out a Border Collie Woofie named BRINKS was lost in our neighborhood!
(To our foreign readers, an "Amber Alert" is a PSA that goes out for missing children.)
The message was detailed and informative, told me ALL about BRINKS, and a number to call if he was found/seen. ?I wrote the number down and called to find out more about BRINKS, like what part of our neighborhood was he last seen? ?And guess what? ?When I called I got BRINKS? dad on the phone, and BRINKS was already home! ?Somebody else had seen BRINKS after getting the same phone call and got him to come to them.
Apparently,?PETAMBERALERT.COM?is AWESOME. ?It's available in the US and Canada. ? BRINKS? dad found the site, signed up, and it automatically faxed and emailed ALL the surrounding VETS and SHELTERS.Then, if that wasn?t good enough--it calls EVERYBODY [like me] within a THREE MILE radius, BRINKS lived two miles away from us!
