Urinary protein excretion -- even in the normal range -- raises diabetics' heart risks, study finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In individuals with type 2 diabetes, any degree of measurable urinary protein excretion -- even in what is considered the normal range -- increases their risk of experiencing heart problems, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of new study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). The findings could help identify patients who should be treated with cardioprotective medications.

Some patients with type 2 diabetes experience kidney problems that cause them to excrete increased amounts of the protein albumin in their urine, a condition called albuminuria. These patients have a considerably higher risk of developing heart problems -- such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure -- than other diabetic patients and people in the general population, who are "normoalbuminuric," with urinary albumin excretion levels of less than 20 ?g/min.

Investigators have wondered if any level of albumin excretion -- for example at a level that is the upper range of what is considered normal -- might increase a diabetic patient's risk of developing heart problems. "It would be important to know whether there is a level for albuminuria that differentiates individuals in need of cardioprotective intervention from those with a low risk," said Giuseppe Remuzzi, MD, FRCP, (Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research and Ospedali Riuniti, in Bergamo, Italy). "This is a major health issue since patients with normoalbuminuria account for at least 90% of the diabetic population," he added.

Through an extension of a clinical trial originally designed for other purposes, Dr. Remuzzi, along with Piero Ruggenenti, MD, Esteban Porrini MD (Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research), and others, evaluated the relationship between albumin excretion levels and heart problems in 1,208 normoalbuminuric patients with type 2 diabetes who were followed for an average of 9.2 years.

The researchers found that any degree of measurable albumin excretion bore significant heart risks: ? For each 1 ?g/min in albumin excretion at the start of the study, there was a progressive incremental risk of experiencing heart problems during follow-up. ? Even albuminuria of 1-2 ?g/min significantly associated with increased risk compared with albuminuria <1 ?g/min.

When the investigators looked only at the subgroup of patients who took antihypertensive drugs called ACE inhibitors from the start of the study and throughout the follow-up period, they found no link between albumin excretion levels and heart risks. This suggests that ACE inhibitors have heart-protective properties that may benefit diabetic patients with albuminuria and normoalbuminuria alike. Future clinical trials are needed to identify levels of albumin excretion above which such cardioprotective therapy is beneficial.

IFA 2012 Day 1 wrap-up

Guten tag! We're fresh off the floor for the first official day of IFA 2102 and wanted to take a few minutes to round all the news up in one easy-to-read post in case you missed any of it. IFA is an exciting show for Android fans everywhere, as it shows us all what's in store for the second part of the year. What started as a consumer electronics show for the European market has turned into a global showcase of new technology for all of the world to see. 

As a follow up to their lavish presentation from Wednesday, Sony got a little more intimate and talked at length about their design principles and strategy. We were there, and Alex has a great synopsis of the meeting -- be sure to have a look. Also, don't miss seeing what a GINORMOUS Sony Windows 8 tablet looks like when put next to something a bit more normal-sized. 

We also heard a bit about the British release of Sony's new gear from Three UK and Carphone Warehouse. Don't forget us on this side of the pond, Sir Howard!

Samsung still had a lot to say about the new Galaxy Note 2, with a booth full of accessories and news about an all-new SDK to take advantage of the S-Pen. Moleskine is taking advantage of the SDK's new features and was happy to give us a demo. Looks outstanding! 

Of course, Samsung's Galaxy Camera was again the star of the show. It's new and trendy, and we expect Samsung to want to show it off. Which they did, in a handful of colors. We got to go hands-on with the camera UI, and even have a long, hard look at sample images from the 16MP sensor. Not too shabby.

Samsung wasn't finished though, as they showed off a Galaxy S III (Galaxy S3), in black, with LTE, running Jelly Bean. That should get some excitement going.

Some other companies weren't about to let Sony and Samsung have all the fun though, and we saw an up-close and personal look at the HTC Desire X, got some hands-on time with Huawei's new Emotion UI, and even got to plaster our fingerprints all over a shiny white LG Optimus L9. And this was just day one.

1.? Austal To Expand, Hire 1,000 More Employees in Mobile

?

MOBILE -- Gov. Robert Bentley recently announced a $5 million project agreement between the state and Austal USA that will help the shipbuilder add up to 1,000 full-time jobs in Mobile. The Phase V Agreement, a five-year project that will help Austal continue its workforce expansion, will provide employee training services Alabama Industrial Development Training.

?

Austal currently employs about 3,000 people to build Joint High Speed Vessels and littoral combat ships for the U.S. Navy. Under a current project agreement, that number is expected to grow by an additional 600. Once the Phase V Agreement is complete, Austal expects to have 4,600 employees in Mobile.

2.? Cooperation Lauded in Effort To Attract Walgreens To Shoals

?

Corporate officials from Walgreens applauded the cooperation of local and state leaders during a news conference at Muscle Shoals City Hall. In addition to 350 more jobs coming to the Shoal during the next three years, plans also call for a $3.5 million capital investment in the expansion that involves an additional 16,000 square foot expansion.

Troy Mills, divisional vice president for customer care for Walgreens, said his company was impressed with the bipartisan effort from local legislators to pass legislation in March that created a permitting process to allow the call center to continue its current operation and expand. "It really was democracy in action, to push through something that can generally take five to six months and do it in basically a month," he said.

3.? Mercedes To Create 45 New Jobs in Tuscaloosa County

VANCE -- Mercedes-Benz is trying to gain a foothold for its Alabama-made luxury SUVs in fast-growing Asian markets through a new partnership with a logistics firm that has created at least 45 jobs in Tuscaloosa County and the potential for more.

The German automaker and BLG Logistics outlined details of their plan to produce and ship SKD, or Semi Knocked Down, kits for the M-Class and GL-Class SUVs to India, Indonesia and Thailand.

4.? Honda To Add 50 Employees, Invest $115 Million in Alabama Plant

Honda plans to invest an additional $115 million and fill 50 new positions in its Alabama operations. The company is also making a major change in the plant's shifts to meet growing demand.

In January, the factory will move to a two-shift work schedule of four, 10-hour days per week (Monday through Thursday) for most vehicle assembly operations. Honda employs more than 4,000 people at its $2 billion plant in Lincoln, where it produces the Odyssey minivan, Pilot SUV and Ridgeline pickup.

Honda has announced nearly 300 new jobs and $390 million in new investment in Lincoln since last fall to increase production capacity and prepare for the addition of the Acura MDX SUV to its assembly lines next year, among other projects.

5.? Alabama Exports Rise Faster than National Average

Alabama exports are increasing at a faster pace than the national average. Merchandise exports from Alabama grew at more than twice the national average through the first six months of 2012, according to a new report from the International Trade Administration.

?

Alabama merchandise exports increased to $10.1 billion in the first half of 2012. That's up 16 percent from $8.7 billion from the same period in 2011. The national growth rate for merchandise exports was 7 percent.

?

Exports were also up for several of the state's top merchandise export destinations, including the United Kingdom (up 68 percent), Germany (up 55 percent) and Mexico (up 40 percent).

?

The state's key sectors for merchandise exports are transportation equipment, chemicals, minerals and ores, primary metals and machinery.

6.? Amtex Expansion To Create 110 Jobs

?

A global automotive supplier in Jasper has announced an expansion that will bring more than 100 new jobs to the area.

Amtex, a tier one supplier for automotive parts to Japanese and domestic manufacturers, will establish a new facility in Jasper. The manufacturing plant will be located in the Tom Bevill Industrial Park, near the company?s current location. The company manufactures carpet and interior trim components for the automotive industry. Construction has already begun on the plant.

7.? DRS Technologies To Open in Andalusia

?

DRS Technologies will open a new operation at South Alabama Regional Airport in Andalusia.

The company?s focus is defense technology, and it develops, manufactures and supports a broad range of systems for the military and Homeland Security. At SARA, it will do aircraft maintenance and upgrades.

Ed Boyington, DRS vice president and general manager for aviation and logistics, said one of the keys for the company?s decision to open there was location. ?There are plenty of empty hangars,? he said. ?They?re just not in as good a physical location as this one.? Boyington said the proximity to Eglin, Hurlburt Field, Pensacola Naval Station, special ops, and Ft. Rucker made the local airport an attractive location. ?Just as important,? he said, ?is the environment you and your team across the board have set for business.

Construction will begin in September on the 150,000-square-foot addition to the plant, which produces roofing membranes that provide resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure. The work is expected to be complete by the second quarter of 2013.

By July 2015, an additional manufacturing line will start up, creating about 40 jobs.

"Expansion to the Firestone Shoals plant will allow us to gain some much-needed warehouse space for the short term and increase our manufacturing capabilities to meet customer demand in the future," Tim Dunn, president of Firestone Building Products, said.

10. Two Companies Expand Facilities in St. Clair County

Two companies in northern St. Clair County announced expansions and new jobs this month. Rain Bird and Yachiyo Manufacturing of Alabama facility, located in Steele, announced expansions and will create over 70 new jobs.

Rain Bird Corporation is currently the leading manufacturer and provider of irrigation products and services. It located a manufacturing, assembly and distribution facility in Steele in 2008 in the building previously occupied by Saks. ?After opening with 25 employees, the facility has announced two expansions, which will raise their employee number to more than 70 employees. ?The expansion includes a capital investment in the facility?s equipment of $2.4 million.

Yachiyo Manufacturing of Alabama is an automotive supplier specializing in automotive frame parts for the Honda facility in Lincoln. The company, headquartered near Tokyo, originated in 1951 as a component painter for Honda motorcycle parts.

Sony Xperia T Hands-On

Powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and a 4.6in HD screen, the newly announced Xperia T is Sony's latest flagship smartphone.

Sony revealed the new handset - which is used by no other than James Bond in the new Skyfall film - during its IFA press conference and IBTimes UK has spent some hands-on time with the phone to see what it's like.

The first thing we noticed was the screen, which is one of Sony's so-called Reality displays and is very impressive, with sharp vivid colours, very dark blacks and the ability to display 720p HD video.

As it's due out soon, the Xperia T is currently running Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich, but we expect to see it, and some other Sony smartphones, updated to the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the future.

For now though, Ice Cream Sandwich runs very well on the Xperia T, and the user experience certainly lives up to the expectations set by placing this phone at the very top of Sony's product range.

The phone feels well-made and able to widthstand a few knocks, although we were less than impressed with a flimsy plastic flap covering the microSD and SIM card slots, which felt like it could easily snap off.

Hopefully Sony will fit a more sturdy flap before the Xperia T goes on sale in the coming weeks; Sony is yet to give the T an exact release date and pricing remains a mystery too.

Around the back, Sony has installed a massive 13-megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom and the ability to shoot full 1080p HD video. We're looking forward to spending more time with the Xperia T and its camera to see if that huge pixel count can produce great photos to match.

Add this impressive camera to a phone with performance to match, and the Xperia T could well be knocking on the door of the HTC One X and Galaxy S3, and claim to be one of the best smartphones on the market - although a quick update to Jelly Bean will be crucial in achieving this status.

Bankruptcy Advice: Choosing a Reputable and Experienced - Patch

Consumers struggling with overwhelming debt need the correct guidance from approved counselors before making the life-changing decision to file for bankruptcy.

Despite the fact that all agencies must be approved by the U.S. Trustee and within the consumer?s home state, there are discrepancies between agencies ? particularly when it comes to following the required pre-bankruptcy counseling protocol.

?As is the case with many industries, there are differences in the level of service and education provided by various credit counseling agencies,? said Steve Trumble, President and CEO of American Consumer Credit Counseling, which is based in Newton, Mass. ?There are good players and bad players, and choosing the right agency is vital in the bankruptcy counseling process.? Because of that reality and the fact that bankruptcy is such an incredibly complex process, consumers should be aware of the protocols and best practices among counseling agencies.?

Before consumers can file for bankruptcy, it is suggested that they speak to a bankruptcy attorney before completing their legally required pre and post bankruptcy counseling session with an agency approved by the Department of Justice.

The majority of consumers are completing their pre-bankruptcy session online leaving themselves open for misinterpretation of their financial situation. If consumers choose to complete the course online they should choose an agency that also requires a 15-minute financial de-briefing via telephone following their online session before receiving their certificate.

??This 15 minute live counseling and education de-briefing is vital for consumers so that they can learn what it means to file for bankruptcy, including an introduction to the necessary steps and potential future consequences that could result,? said Trumble.

Consumers should also be aware of the time spent during regular counseling sessions.? A full counseling session with an adequately trained counselor should last between 60 and 90 minutes. Agencies are also required to discuss fees prior to any counseling session, and provide the counseling session free of charge if the consumer cannot afford to pay the fee. The agency may also not provide legal advice as to whether or not a consumer should file for bankruptcy.

Experience is another key factor. Consumers should look for nonprofit agencies that have been in the business for at least 7 to 10 years and that have adequately trained counselors who are experienced in the area of bankruptcy counseling. Make sure these agencies also have proper certification. ACCC is ISO 9001 certified through the International Organization for Standardization which ensures that our quality management system provides continuous improvement and client satisfaction. The agency should also be a member of one of two trade associations ? the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA) or the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC).?

Finally, it?s always a good idea to research the agency. A brief check-in with the Better Business Bureau can be a valuable way to learn about any consumer complaints made against the agency.

?There are many unknowns for consumers as they decide whether filing bankruptcy is the best choice for them, such as risks to personal credit scores, the costs associated with filing, and the possessions a person can retain,? said Trumble. ?It?s important that consumers be able to rely on experienced, validated and reputable agencies that can provide the type of education necessary in this process.

Robin Roberts Exits Good Morning America, Replacements Confirmed

Robin Roberts announced today that she is leaving Good Morning America one day earlier than scheduled, not due to her impending bone marrow transplant, but as a result of Hurricane Isaac.

She is flying home to Mississippi to be with her ailing 88-year-old mother, Lucimarian, along with her family, which is in the eye of the storm.

"I know the journey ahead will not be easy," said Roberts, who is dealing with a blood disorder known as Myelodysplastic Syndrome. "Just know that I'm going to come back here as soon as I can."

In Roberts' temporary absence, Good Morning America will welcome a number of high-profile guest anchors. Among them, it's been confirmed: Oprah Winfrey, Chrid Rock, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Kelly Ripa and the Modern Family cast.

"This means so much [that] these friends are stepping up like this," Roberts said. "I love them for that!"

How pandas pick perfect spot to pee

Wild giant pandas are endangered loners that roam remote bamboo forests in the mountains of China. When the bears actually want to find each other ? typically during their short mating window ? it's important that they pick the perfect place to leave their scent.

So what qualities do peeing pandas look for in a tree? Researchers say bark roughness helps the pandas' scent carry, while a large width makes for an easier target to aim at, especially for male pandas spraying urine in a handstand.

Researchers monitored where pandas left their pee and smelly anogenital gland secretions (AGS) ? a waxy substance that carries information about a panda's sex and age ? in the Qinling Mountains from 2007 to 2008. They found that the pandas preferred to leave both scents on rough bark, which might ensure the odor is captured by the crevices and doesn't evaporate quickly.

The pandas also liked to leave their scent higher off the ground, maximizing the size of the odor field, the researchers said. To get their urine up as high as possible, male pandas often bust out a handstand and let it spray. This, in turn, could explain why the pandas tended to pee on wider trees. "Aiming urine backwards and hitting the target is probably no easy task, particularly when doing a handstand," the researchers wrote in the July 2012 issue of the journal Animal Behavior, "so selection of larger trees for urine marks probably maximizes the amount of urine that reaches the target."

The study's authors initially thought moss might have the same effect as bark roughness, serving as a sponge for the pandas' scent. But moss cover seemed to make little difference in where the pandas peed.

What's more, the bears liked to leave their waxy gland secretions (also called "long-lasting calling cards" by some) on trees with no moss. One explanation for this could be that the bark's sap might bind to scent chemicals and keep them potent. Moss cover might prevent that from happening, the researchers said.

The panda's deliberate scent-marking moves are likely tied to energy efficiency. The bears almost exclusively survive on bamboo, which contains just slightly more energy than it takes to consume it.

"These choices have clear effects on the scent signal, making it last longer, be detected from (farther) away, or otherwise enhance its communication efficiency," Ron Swaisgood, a San Diego Zoo researcher involved in the study, said in a statement.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

The blend is aN aroma reminiscent of plum pudding and has been created by flavouring the Colombian Excelsior medium bean with a combination of rum, hazelnut, cinnamon, vanilla, orange and pecan nut flavours.

Japan ambassador targeted in China amid protests

The car carrying Japan's ambassador to China was targeted in Beijing on Monday by a man who ripped off the vehicle's national flag, prompting a protest by Tokyo, Japanese officials said.

The incident followed widespread anti-Japan demonstrations in China over a disputed East China Sea island chain known in China as Diaoyu and in Japan as Senkaku.

The ambassador, Uichiro Niwa, was in the vehicle at the time but was not hurt in the incident, said a Japanese foreign ministry official in Tokyo.

An official at the Japanese embassy told AFP the Japanese flag, which identifies the ambassador's car, was taken away by the man but the vehicle was not damaged in the afternoon incident.

"At least two cars let the ambassador's car stop on the road and a Chinese man took the national flag," he said.

Chinese authorities later said they were "seriously investigating" the incident, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The agency quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying the Chinese government always conscientiously fulfils the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to protect the safety of foreign embassies and personnel.

Diplomatic vehicles in China are also identified by special car plates but typically only ambassadors' vehicles carry national flags.

A Japanese diplomat later registered a protest with the Chinese foreign ministry in a meeting, demanding an investigation and prevention of future such incidents, the embassy official said.

No arrests have been made, he said, adding the embassy has not warned Japanese nationals in China following the incident.

Tensions between Japan and China flared earlier this month after pro-Beijing activists who landed on one of the disputed islands were arrested by Japanese authorities and later deported.

Around a dozen nationalists raised Japanese flags on the island just days later.

Thousands of Chinese citizens in more than 20 cities have protested over the last two weeks, which saw Japanese businesses, restaurants and cars targeted in some cities.
