Ladies and gentlemen, for Labor Day Weekend, we give you "the hardest working man in show business," James Brown. "The T.A.M.I. Show" will screen during the FLIFF-Pal-Looza closing party on Monday.
J.R. and Amanda Linton united in marriage on Halloween, 2008, as perhaps South Florida?s leading power couple of gloriously lowbrow culture.
On Saturday, they will take things up a notch with the grand-opening party for their new collaboration: Ink and Pistons Tattoo Shop and Art Gallery (2716 S. Dixie Highway, No. 101, West Palm Beach).
J.R., the tattoo artist best known for his celebration of pinups and hot rods at Hellcat Tattoos, is set up in the front of the 2,500-square-foot space, where he?ll work alongside other popular South Florida artists, namely Chris Rude and Lea Vendetta (formerly of Spike TV?s ?Ink Master?). Amanda, well known for her Stitch Rock and Art Rock shows that celebrated local artists, crafters and unorthodox creativity, will be found curating the art space made up of Stitch Rock Shop and Slushbox Gallery (named after a slang term for an automatic car transmission).
Amanda Linton says her and J.R.?s ambitions dovetail like the tailfins on a 1959 Cadillac.
?It was time to do something together,? she says. ?We?re really good together. We have the same business mind, we make decisions together, and pretty much agree most of the time.?
As big as the place is, there is room for expansion next door, and Amanda has a dream.
?I?d like to have a place to teach, have craft classes. The kind of facility where people come to exchange ideas, to be inspired,? she says.
For now, Saturday?s 7-11 p.m. party will offer an opportunity to show off the shop and gallery, with work by more than 20 local artists and a ?really rad? wall by popular Palm Beach County muralist Eduardo Mendieta (a k a EM). The Salvagers Car Club will have hot rods, PS561 will do hot dogs and Sugar Mama Sweets will provide the sugar.

IMPRESSIVE SENDOFF
The story is that Sunday?s show at the Summer Jam Music Festival at Meyer Amphitheatre in downtown West Palm Beach will be the last ever for SoFla reggae-rockers B-Liminal. If so, they?ll get a proper sendoff on an impressive two-day bill. Sunday highlights are B-Liminal (2:15 p.m.), Nonpoint (4:15 p.m.), JJ Grey and Mofro (6:30 p.m.) and Seven Mary Three (8:50 p.m.); the Monday music includes Rootz Underground (12:45 p.m.), Supervillains (2:30 p.m.), Ky-Mani Marley (4:30 p.m.), Shaggy (6:30 p.m.) and Toots and the Maytals (8:30 p.m.). Tickets cost $30, or $50 for a two-day pass. Info: MusicJamProductions.com.
MEN ON FIRE
The 20th annual edition of the South Florida Firefighters Calendar will be unveiled with its usual pomp and pectorals on Thursday night at a celebration at the Seminole Paradise in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino complex (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood). The festivities, highlighted by autograph meet-and-greets with the firefighters (including Hollywood Fire Rescue's Ronny Arvelo, left), are traditionally a pretty raucous affair. Feel free to objectify the guys as much as you want. The party, benefiting local charities, including Here's Help, A Safe Haven for Newborns and Friends Forever Rescue, begins at 8:30 p.m. (calendar presale starts at 6 p.m.) and is free; calendars cost $20. The afterparty is nearby at Murphy's Law. Info: 954-585-5112, Firefighterscalendar.com. Hit the link for a talk with Ronny Arvelo and more information about the South Florida Firefighters Calendar.
BIG METAL BALLS
Not bragging or anything, but the first Veuve Clicquot Petanque Tournament on Miami Beach that I remember was way back in 2001 on Lincoln Road, and an assortment of mes amis nearly won the thing. Probably because the rest of the field had been sampling the sponsor?s product. But that?s part of the attraction of petanque, a French brother of Italy?s bocce. On Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Bella Beach Club at the Trump International Beach Resort (18001 Collins, Sunny Isles Beach), the champagne-maker will bring out the heavy metal spheres and flutes (daring, non?) for another Veuve Clicquot Petanque Tournament. Entry is free (two members per team), prizes include a two-night stay at the resort, spa treatments and something from Veuve Clicquot. Register for the tournament at info@bellabeachclub.com or 305-673-3873.
HOW'S YOUR CORNHOLE?
Then, there?s cornhole. Which is not the main attraction of Cuban Pig Out 2, a fundraising cookout hosted by the band PALO! on Sunday at Little Havana?s way-cool PAX, but is just like petanque balls and champagne, except it?s beanbags and beer. CPO2, which the boys of PALO! describe as ?our funky twist on a traditional Guateque Campesino,? includes a Cuban pig roast, art, games, raffles and live music from PALO! Proceeds benefit the South Florida arts organization Life Is Art. Admission to the 4-11 p.m. party is $10 (with free, secure parking), and includes the pork dinner by El Exquisito. Local artists will have works for sale, PALO! will perform at 6 p.m. and the cornhole games will cost $2 per game, leading up to a tournament later in the night. The party is 21-and-older (younger must be accompanied by parent). PAX is at 337 SW Eighth St., Miami. Info: PaxMiami.com, 305-640-5847.
NOT ONLY ROCK AND ROLL
The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and Cinema Paradiso are hosting FLIFF-Pal-Looza, four days of movies about some of the most-popular acts in rock ?n? roll, culminating in a closing-night party on Monday with eats, drinks and live music from Miami honky-tonkers the 18 Wheelers (right). The screenings include films about the Doors (?When You?re Strange, 9:45 p.m. Friday); Phish (?Bittersweet Motel,? 7:15 p.m. Saturday); Pink Floyd (?The Wall,? 9 p.m. Saturday); the Who (?The Kids Are Alright,? 7:15 p.m. Sunday); U2 (?Rattle and Hum,? 9 p.m. Sunday); and Elvis (?Elvis: That?s the Way It Is,? 4 p.m. Monday; ?Elvis on Tour,? 6 p.m. Monday). The closing party, which will be accompanied by a screening of the cult-classic film ?The T.A.M.I. Show? (featuring the likes of James Brown, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, the Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry) will begin at 8 p.m. Monday. Cinema Paradiso is at 503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets: $6, $5 members. Info: Fliff.com, 954-525-3456. Hit the link for a chat about the music with FLIFF president Greg Von Hausch and more information about FLIFF-Pal-Looza.
BRINGIN' THE FUNK
Suenalo has shared a stage with the likes of Pitbull and Ozomatli, and this year performed at SXSW, so perhaps the nine-piece Latin funk outfit is ready for Lake Worth. The band, which traffics in a sweat-inducing mix of rumba, reggae and electronic sounds that is quintessentially South Florida, will put on a two-hour show 9 p.m. Friday at the Bamboo Room (25 S. J St.). Tickets: $12 advance, $15 day of show. Info: Bamboorm.com, 561-585-2583.
IT'S RACHEL
Rachel Goodrich, the much-adored Miami Beach singer-songwriter who lit out for L.A. some years back, will bring her subversively sweet jingle-jangle to the Stage (170 NE 38th St., Miami) on Friday night, kicking off a tour through the South. Local troubadour Jesse Jackson will open the sweet double bill. The 21-and-older show?s at 10 p.m., with a $10 cover. Info: TheStageMiami.com, 305-576-9577.
AIR APPARENT
You?ve always wanted to fly off a 30-foot ramp in a contraption you built yourself, Wile E. Coyote-style, and the good folks at Red Bull are giving you another shot at it when they bring the Flugtag back to Miami?s Bayfront Park on Nov. 3. We mention this because Saturday is your last chance to get in your application for the event (which is expected to be witnessed by thousands). And, remember, just because your design is complete, there is still the matter of choreography. You and your buddies (limit five in a crew) also must impress the judges with theatricality, showmanship and creativity. For rules and to submit an application, go to RedBullFlugtagUSA.com.
STAND BY
For Labor Day Weekend, Fort Lauderdale nightlife curator Adam Foster?s invitation asks, ?Why go to Miami?? Foster?s multinight party at Vibe on Las Olas includes sets by himself Thursday night and with Joe Maz on Friday night, and reaches its EDM zenith on Saturday with Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Dave Aude. The L.A.-based Aude has worked with U2, Coldplay and Will.i.am., and also had the audacity to mix up a club version of Tammy Wynette?s ?Stand by Your Man.? For info/table reservation, email info@VibeLasOlas.com or call 954-713-7313.
THE DJ THING
But if you were going to Miami for your DJ fix, it might be on Saturday to see Tiesto at Liv in the Fontainebleau (4441 Collins), which will also host the release party for DJ Khaled?s ?Kiss the Ring? on Sunday night. Info: LivNightclub.com, 305-674-4680.
FREE MUSIC
The last time we saw Valerie Tyson on an outdoor stage at the Starlight Musicals series in Fort Lauderdale?s Holiday Park, gospel singer Maryell Epps showed up, so you never know what might happen at 8 p.m. Saturday in Hollywood. That?s when Tyson will perform in the beautiful surroundings of Young Circle for ArtsPark Live! Info: 954-921-3404. On Sunday, the monthly SunTrust Jazz Brunch rolls out under the shade trees on Fort Lauderdale?s New River from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Excellent sounds, food, drink and people-watching. Info: 954- 828-5363.
