Transcendental Meditation Means Less Stress in Education

Transcendental Meditation counteracts record stress levels found in school students according to a new report published by the Journal of Instructional Psychology.

Reduced stress

The study found that Transcendental Meditation visibly reduced psychological distress in at-risk racial and ethnic minority public students. The reduction was 36 percent over 4 months compared against controls. The study also found significant reductions in trait anxiety and evidence of depression.

My research at the worksite a number of years ago found a 58% fall in self-reported stress symptoms, using a standardized test. So this new finding doesn't amaze me a bit.

South African policy makers would do well to take note of these findings. The study implies Transcendental Meditation has substantial benefits for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Over 80% of the study sample was taken from ?ethnic and racial minorities ?, which in the United States equates with poorer backgrounds.

In S. A. , the poorer sector of the people is the majority and is in reality a major focus of state policy. Our latest State Planning Commission reports that literacy and numeracy in SA grades 3 and 6 rates just about 139th in the world. We have Huge Problems!

So it is riveting to read that a study published earlier in the year in the journal ?Education ? showed improved maths and English results among low-performing middle college students (customarily Black and Hispanic) who learned Transcendental Meditation.

In S. A. Improvement of English and maths abilities is at present the main focus of the Ministry of Basic Education.

So what are we waiting for? More systematic validation or more celebrity endorsements?

Those South African teachers who have had the good fortune to work with TM in schools have seen it all before. Inside roughly a week of starting the implementation of ?quiet time? in a college, violence and bullying subsides, student behavior improves, teachers find learners to be more awake and receptive: ?its a transition to heaven from the lowest levels of Hell.

So just one more time: WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?

Transcendental Meditation decreases stress. Stress hinders learning. The atmosphere in colleges leaves a lot to be desired. Teacher burnout is also a problem. All these negative results of stress melt away when T M is introduced into an organisation.
