Singer asks fans to obey police as outdoor concert turns into mob scene.

Justin Bieber attracts a crowd wherever he goes, but things got a little out of hand in Norway on Wednesday as the pop star kicked off the European promo tour behind his new album, Believe.

Bieber was in the Scandinavian country's capital city, Oslo, to perform a free six-song concert outside of the Oslo Opera House, but the site was quickly overrun by several thousand fans, who at one point began chasing after a car presumed to be transporting Bieber to the concert location while ignoring police warnings and causing a spike in mobile usage that briefly crippled cellular service in the city.

Police reportedly threated to cancel the performance — and, according to TMZ, nearly declared a state of emergency — before Bieber took to Twitter to try to calm his legion of fans.

"Please listen to the police. I don't want anyone getting hurt. I want everything to go to plan but your safety must come first," Bieber tweeted. "For the show to happen u must all listen to the police. We are all concerned for your safety and I want what is best for u. Please listen."

The "Boyfriend" singer's words of caution apparently tamed fans enough, and police allowed the show to proceed. However, officials demanded Bieber push the start time back by half an hour so scene security would not deteriorate further.

Billboard reports that an on-scene security officer said "about 15 girls passed out."

Police cite the venue chosen as one of the key issues that contributed to the chaotic scene: "The concert should be held somewhere other than roof of the Opera, which has clear space limitations," a police official told the Norwegian NRK news service.

The concert was filmed as part of Bieber's upcoming "Justin Bieber: All Around the World" TV special, which follows the singer on his 12-day, seven-country promo tour. The special is set to air at 8 p.m. June 21 on NBC. Bieber is currently on his way to Paris for his next appearance.

This isn't the first time Bieber's presence has resulted in an out-of-control scene: In November 2009, a teenage girl was injured and several fights broke out as thousands descended on the Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, New York, in what devolved into a stampede ahead of the singer's scheduled appearance there. Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance for failing to properly control the situation after receiving police warnings about potential problems at the venue. Those charges were later dropped.

A child in a military family, Michael D. Crossett lived in Hawaii, Japan, Pennsylvania, Alabama and Virginia by the time he was in high school. These drastically different cultural influences shaped his point of view and his artistic eye. In particular, he has incorporated characteristics of the Japanese aesthetic ??the highly designed nature of everyday objects, the bright colors, and bold but patterns. The graphic appeal and immediacy of these elements still drives his approach today.

Crossett currently has a solo exhibition at?gallery plan b?on 14th Street NW through June 17 and a group show in Provincetown. Potential future projects include public installations, sculpture, oil painting and encaustic.

As a teenager, Crossett took up photography and carefully developed his photographs to control the final image.? He continues to take photographs but lost interest as digital methods began to eclipse traditional photography. Above all, he values the instant connections viewers develop with photographs and has successfully translated that connection into other mediums.

Crossett majored in marketing and advertising at George Mason and currently works as a Director of Design. About five years ago, he earned a Certificate of Graphic Design from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He began experimenting with silk screening and mixed media collage. He often manipulates photographed images by transferring them to silkscreen and adding them into collages.

Crossett?s greatest ambition for his work is ?connecting with people? rather than alienating them with inscrutable subject matter. He seeks to engage viewers, draw them in with a sense of familiarity, and then push them to learn through his art. This goal was evident in the pieces he displayed during last Saturday?s Mid City Artists open studios, many of which included details and images easily associated with specific locations in their composition.

As a local artist, Crossett appreciates the?small town? feel of? D.C.?s neighborhoods that contrast with the city?s reputation as a? major tour destination. Two of his favorite areas in DC.are the 14th Street Corridor and Mount Pleasant. Around Borderstan, he frequently visits Estadio, Teasim, U Street Music Hall, Coppi?s, and 9:30 Club.

Soy supplement shows no blood pressure ... - Body Health & Fitness

(Reuters) ? Soy-rich diets have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, but soy supplements alone may not do anything for older women?s blood pressure, according to a U.S. study.

The findings, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, add to the mixed evidence on the health benefits of soy isoflavones ? compounds that are thought to have weak estrogen-like effects in some body tissue.

Researchers have long known that Asian populations with soy-rich diets have lower rates of heart disease compared with people who eat ?Western? diets, but it has not been clear whether soy isoflavone supplements have cardiovascular benefits, such as cutting blood pressure or cholesterol levels.

A number of studies have found that intravenous infusions of soy isoflavones may boost the body?s production of nitric oxide and help blood vessels dilate.

?But we don?t take soy by infusion,? said William Wong, a nutrition researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who led the study.

On top of that, he told Reuters Health, those studies looked at short-term effects on blood vessel function, and not whether there are ?sustained? benefits for blood pressure.

So for their study, Wong and his colleagues randomly assigned 24 menopausal women to take either soy isoflavones or placebo tablets for six weeks. The supplement gave a daily dose of 80 milligrams of isoflavones.

All of the women started the study with moderately elevated blood pressure. After six weeks, Wong?s team found that women on the soy supplement were faring no better than those on the placebo.

On average, systolic blood pressure was 136 mm/Hg in the placebo group, and 137 mm/Hg in the soy group. Systolic blood pressure is the first number in a blood-pressure reading, and levels of 140 mm/Hg or above are considered high.

As for diastolic blood pressure, the average in both groups landed at about 80 mm/Hg, or the upper threshold of ?normal.?

Wong?s team also did special blood tests to see whether the soy supplement affected the women?s production of nitric oxide, a chemical that dilates blood vessels. They found no effect.

?It was disappointing,? Wong said.

While the study only lasted for six weeks, Wong said that the time period should have been long enough to detect blood pressure benefits if there were any.

?If we didn?t see anything in six weeks, we doubt there would be effects (longer term),? he said.

He said that the health benefits linked to soy in Asian populations may be the result of a lifetime of eating those foods and taking supplements later in life may simply not have enough of an impact.

Chiba, Japan ? ?Hiroyuki Fujita only managed a one-over 73 on Sunday, but it was enough for a comfortable victory at the Diamond Cup Golf 2012 on the Japan Golf Tour.

Volunteers needed to lead regional Boy Scout troops

For more than 100 years, The Boys Scouts of America have taught young boys how to grow into strong young men with good citizenship, good character and self-reliance. Those are three traits that have been the backbone of America.

But in the last forty years, while America's population has grown from roughly 200 million people to more than 300 million people, the number of scouts has dwindled from 5 million to about 2.7 million.

Tim McCandless, Scout Executive in Spokane says kids today have a lot more options for activities than 40 years ago.

"The main challenge is there is more competition for kid's time. "

Now the national organization has named two new leaders who hope to boost participation with high-energy, high-tech activities including adrenaline rush zip lines at new adventure camps, apps and a television show.

McCandless says it's also the simple, traditional things that Boy Scouts do that are a big attraction for kids.

On June 9th, kids are invited to put down the virtual fishing pole and pick up a real one during the Hooked On Scouting, fishing derby.

"We'll be doing fishing up a Bear Lake County Park, kids love to fish and we'll have all the equipment." Said McCandless.

While there is a nation of boys who aren't interested in scouting, there is also the problem of finding men who are willing to give their time and train the boys in the Aims of scouting; character development, citizenship and personal fitness.

"We don't have a problem recruiting boys it's the challenge of finding parents?who have the time or are willing to devote the time to volunteering.

The 1966 movie "Follow Me Boys" starring Fred MacMurray tells the story of a wandering musician, Lemuel Siddons, who finds his purpose in life when he becomes a Scout leader. At the ends of the movie, Siddons sees the impact he's made on his community when his original group of kids return to the town for a parade in his honor. The group of misfits is now filled with a lawyer, a doctor, a mayor and even a governor.

"It's one of the best things I do, volunteering with these kids. It's a great blessing to those who do volunteer." Said McCandless.

Portland Police Find Mother Of Three Children Allegedly Abandoned In Shed

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The mother of three young children abandoned in a Portland shed was found by police on Friday, a day after the kids were taken to safety.

Authorities did not immediately identify the mother or say why the boy and two girls were left in a shed next to a vacant house in southeast Portland. Lt. Robert King, a police spokesman, said investigators were questioning the mother Friday afternoon and no charges had been filed.

He said a tip from the public led police to the woman shortly after noon Friday. She was in Portland.

The whereabouts of the mother had been a mystery since Thursday morning, when a neighbor called the authorities to report hearing voices at the vacant house that is popular with homeless people. When officers investigated, the squatters told them there were three small children there, and they had been abandoned by a woman the night before.

Another neighbor, Judy Baxter, 65, said that when police officers and social services workers arrived, they gave stuffed toys to the kids, all of whom appeared to be younger than age 4.

The youngest child, a girl Baxter estimated to be about 9 months old, was carried out of the house by an officer.

"They were sure little cuties," Baxter told The Associated Press Friday.

"It's just so sad for the kids," she said. "I won't tell you what they need to do to her (the mother)."

Baxter is the former owner of the vacant house ? the property on which the shed is located ? and lives across from it. She sold that house in 2006.

Baxter said that Thursday morning, she saw some young people entering the gates at the unkempt house, so she called the current owner. The owner also contacted police.

"I'm just glad that I'm nosy," Baxter said.

The children passed a medical checkup and were taken into protective custody.

King said the state Department of Human Services will hold a hearing next week to determine where to next place the children.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Food stamp recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash ? sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist ? and then asking the government for replacement cards.

The Agriculture Department wants to curb the practice by giving states more power to investigate people who repeatedly claim to lose their benefit cards.

It is proposing new rules Thursday that would allow states to demand formal explanations from people who seek replacement cards more than three times a year. Those who don't comply can be denied further cards.

"Up to this point, the state's hands have been tied unless they absolutely suspected fraudulent activity," said Kevin Concannon, the department's undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services.

Overall, food stamp fraud costs taxpayers about $750 million a year, or 1 percent of the $75 billion program that makes up the bulk of the department's total budget for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Most fraud occurs when unscrupulous retailers allow customers to turn in their benefits cards for lesser amounts of cash. But USDA officials are also concerned about people selling or trading cards in the open market, including through websites.

Last year, the department sent letters urging eBay and Craigslist to notify customers that it's illegal to buy and sell food stamps. USDA officials followed up last month, saying they are still getting complaints that people are using the websites to illegally market food stamps.

Both eBay and Craigslist have told the government they are actively reviewing their sites for illegal activity and would take down ads offering food stamp benefits for cash. The USDA also has warned Facebook and Twitter about the practice.

South Dakota, Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Minnesota and Washington state have the highest percentage of recipients seeking four or more replacement cards over a year. But USDA officials said that doesn't necessarily indicate a high rate of fraud. All states are required by law to reissue lost or stolen cards to those who are eligible for benefits.

Wyoming, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Alabama have the lowest percentage of households requesting four or more cards in a 12-month period.

In North Carolina, the state already issues warning letters to people who request four replacement cards in a year, letting them know that officials are monitoring them closely. Dean Simpson, chief of economic family services for the North Carolina Division of Social Services, said the new rules would give her state even more of a boost in curbing food stamp fraud.

"I think it would help with the trafficking and let individuals know they are being observed and watched," said Simpson, who oversees the state's distribution of food stamps.

More than 46 million people receive food stamps, nearly half of them children. The average monthly benefit is $132 per person.

Benefit cards work like debit cards, allowing users to swipe them for food purchases at some 231,000 stores around the country that are authorized to take part in the food stamp program. Once a card is reported lost or stolen, it can be disabled immediately. But the USDA does not require photo identification, since several members of a family, including children, may use the cards at different times.

Concannon stressed that the USDA wants to be sensitive to vulnerable people who may lose their cards for innocent reasons. While it may sound suspicious for someone to lose a card two or three times a year, food stamp recipients include many people who are homeless or have dementia or mental illness, he said.

"Our concern is that in many instances, it may point to a trafficking issue," he said.

Last year, about 850,000 people were investigated for possible food stamp fraud. About 2,000 stores were sanctioned for illegal conduct, and 1,200 stores were permanently removed from the food stamp program.

Large supermarkets are seldom involved in illegal activity, Concannon said. The vast majority of fraud is found in smaller shops and convenience stores.

The USDA is currently developing tougher sanctions and penalties for retailers engaging in food stamp fraud. It is also taking steps to make sure that people disqualified from the program for illegal activity are not able to use it again in other states.

Biologists Leonard Freed and Rebecca Cann from the University of Hawaii at Manoa have been studying birds at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge for 20 years. Located on an old cattle ranch on the windward slope of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii, it was established in 1985 to protect 8 species of rare and endangered perching birds. The refuge and its volunteers planted over 400,000 seedlings of native koa trees in an abandoned pasture to restore high elevation forest. The once-rare white-eye colonized the restoration area, grew rapidly in it, but then surged into the old-growth forest below. Freed and Cann estimated that tens of thousands of native birds were lost. Their study was recently published in the open access journal NeoBiota.

The researchers had previously shown competition between white-eyes and native birds on their study sites. With increased numbers of white-eyes, young of all native species measured had stunted growth, indicating that food was becoming a problem. They also documented that birds of all ages had difficulty replacing their feathers. Each problem, both unprecedented in nature, occurred at the same time. In contrast to the forest adjacent to the restoration area, native birds deeper within the forest had normal growth and feather replacement where white-eyes were still rare.

Freed and Cann then used the refuge's own survey data collected over 3,373 ha of open forest and 1,998 ha of closed forest to determine if changes observed on their study sites were a general problem on the entire refuge. They documented a stepwise increase in density of white-eyes in the open forest area that had been sustained for 8 years between 2000 and 2007, and a more gradual increase in the closed forest area below that.

Loss of native birds followed the refuge-wide surge of white-eyes. Greater declines occurred in the open forest area where white-eyes increased first, amounting to a drop of one-third of native birds. About 10% of birds disappeared from the closed forest area, but there was strong correlation among losses of native species in the two areas. The researchers expect that losses in the more pristine closed forest area will continue, because the white-eye is still increasing there. Ironically, only an alien species is increasing on a refuge set aside to protect native Hawaiian birds. Forest restoration has precipitated a problem that requires additional action in the forest below. Hawaiian birds are considered to be "conservation reliant" species from other threats. Now the future of native birds on the refuge requires control of an introduced bird.
