Tottenham beats Swansea 2-1 in Premier League

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:02 p.m. ET March 30, 2013

SWANSEA, Wales (AP) -Gareth Bale scored another stunning goal Saturday to give Tottenham a 2-1 win over Swansea that lifted it above Chelsea into third place in the Premier League.

Bale set up Jan Vertonghen for the first goal in the seventh minute and then curled home a brilliant effort in the 21st to double the lead.

Michu pulled Swansea back into the game with his 20th goal of the season in the 71st, but Tottenham held out over a frantic final 20 minutes to bounce back from consecutive losses against Liverpool and Fulham.

With Chelsea losing 2-1 to Southampton, Tottenham is now two points ahead of the London club in third place, but with a game more played.

Newcastle is still uncomfortably close to the relegation zone, sitting just three points out.

Huntington Ingalls gets $2.6B Navy ship contract

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries said Friday that it has won a $2.6 billion contract to refuel and overhaul the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, a 25-year-old nuclear-powered Naval aircraft carrier.

The company said the ship arrived at its Newport News Shipbuilding division Thursday. Work began immediately and will be complete in November 2016. Huntington Ingalls will refuel the ship's reactors and modernize more than 2,300 compartments, 600 tanks, and hundreds of systems. It also will upgrade the flight deck, catapults, combat systems and the "island," the ship's command center for flight deck operations.

Huntington Ingalls said the price includes costs of the work as well as incentive fees.

The refueling and overhaul was scheduled to start in February, but it was delayed because of concerns about funding and the defense budget. Last week both houses of Congress passed a continuing resolution that will keep the government funded through September 30, the end of its current fiscal year. President Obama signed the stopgap funding measure on Tuesday. Huntington Ingalls said the law allowed the Navy and its shipbuilding division to move ahead with the work.

The Abraham Lincoln was built by Huntington Ingalls' Newport News Shipbuilding unit and launched in February 1988. Huntington Ingalls is the largest military shipbuilder in the U.S., and the company is the biggest industrial employer in Virginia. Newport News Shipbuilding is the nation's only builder of aircraft carriers and one of two submarine builders.

Large robotic jellyfish could one day patrol oceans

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have unveiled a life-like, autonomous robotic jellyfish the size and weight of a grown man, 5 foot 7 inches in length and weighing 170 pounds.

The prototype robot, nicknamed Cyro, is a larger model of a robotic jellyfish the same team -- headed by Shashank Priya of Blacksburg, Va., and professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech -- unveiled in 2012. The earlier robot, dubbed RoboJelly, is roughly the size of a man's hand, and typical of jellyfish found along beaches.

"A larger vehicle will allow for more payload, longer duration and longer range of operation," said Alex Villanueva of St-Jacques, New-Brunswick, Canada, and a doctoral student in mechanical engineering working under Priya. "Biological and engineering results show that larger vehicles have a lower cost of transport, which is a metric used to determine how much energy is spent for traveling."

Both robots are part of a multi-university, nationwide $5 million project funded by U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research. The goal is to place self-powering, autonomous machines in waters for the purposes of surveillance and monitoring the environment, in addition to other uses such as studying aquatic life, mapping ocean floors, and monitoring ocean currents.

Jellyfish are attractive candidates to mimic because of their ability to consume little energy owing to a lower metabolic rate than other marine species. Additionally, they appear in wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors, allowing for several designs. They also inhabit every major oceanic area of the world and are capable of withstanding a wide range of temperatures in both fresh and salt waters. Most species are found in shallow coastal waters, but some have been found in depths 7,000 meters below sea level.

Partner universities in the project are Providence College in Rhode Island, the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Stanford University. Priya's team is building the jellyfish body models, integrating fluid mechanics and developing control systems.

Cyro is modeled and named after the jellyfish cyanea capillata, Latin for Llion's Manemain jellyfishJellyfish, with "Cyro" derived from "cyanea" and "robot." As with its predecessor, this robot is in the prototype stage, years away from use in waters. A new prototype model already is under construction at Virginia Tech's Durham Hall, where Priya's Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems is based.

"We hope to improve on this robot and reduce power consumption and improve swimming performance as well as better mimic the morphology of the natural jellyfish," Villanueva said, adding that the project also allows researchers such as himself to better understand aquatic creatures live. "Our hopes for Cyro's future is that it will help understand how the propulsion mechanism of such animal scales with size."

A stark difference exists between the larger and smaller robots. Cyro is powered by a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery, whereas the smaller models were tethered, Priya said. Experiments have also been conducted on powering jellyfish with hydrogen but there is still much research to be done in that area.

In both cases, the jellyfish must operate on their own for months or longer at a time as engineers likely won't be able to capture and repair the robots, or replace power sources. "Cyro showed its ability to swim autonomously while maintaining a similar physical appearance and kinematics as the natural species," Priya said, adding that the robot is simultaneously able to collect, store, analyze, and communicate sensory data. This autonomous operation in shallow water conditions is already a big step towards demonstrating the use of these creatures."

How does the robot swim? Its body consists of a rigid support structure with direct current electric motors which control the mechanical arms that are used in conjunction with an artificial mesoglea, or jelly-based pulp of the fish's body, creating hydrodynamic movement.

With no central nervous system, jellyfish instead use a diffused nerve net to control movement and can complete complex functions. A parallel study on a bio-inspired control system is in progress which will eventually replace the current simplified controller. As with the smaller models, Cyro's skin is composed of a thick layer of silicone, squishy in one's hand. It mimics the sleek jellyfish skin and is placed over a bowl-shaped device containing the electronic guts of the robot. When moving, the skin floats and moves with the robot, looking weirdly alive.

"It has been a great experience to finally realize the biomimetic and bio-inspired robotic vehicles," Priya said. "Nature has too many secrets and we were able to find some of them but many still remain. We hope to find a mechanism to continue on this journey and resolve the remaining puzzles."

Keep police business off Facebook, NYPD tells cops - Technology ...

The New York Police Department has begun policing how its officers use Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

An internal order made public on Thursday advises members of the nation's largest police department to be careful with what they reveal online ? even urging them not to disclose that they're on the force.

Officers "are to exercise good judgment and demonstrate professionalism expected of them while performing their official duties," the memo says. It also warns that "personal social media sites may be used against them to undermine the credibility of the department, interfere with official police business, compromise ongoing investigations and affect their employment status."

The guidelines bar officers from posting photos of themselves in uniform ? with the exception of those taken at promotion or awards ceremonies ? unless they have permission from the department. Officers could face discipline if they don't comply.

Police officials said the policy has been in the works for about two years, and arose out of concern that police officers' online postings could embarrass the NYPD or be misinterpreted as official police policy. The department punished more than a dozen officers after they made degrading remarks about revelers at the West Indian Day Parade in 2011.

"We believe these guidelines are reasonable and make sense," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Thursday.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, which represents 23,000 police officers, declined comment. In the past, the union has cautioned its members about what they post and who they interact with on the Internet.

The NYPD edict prohibits the posting on personal websites of crime scene photos or witness statements. It also bars officers from using social media to contact witnesses, crime victims or lawyers involved in pending cases, or to contact minors who aren't part of their families.

"Such communications may be deemed inappropriate or unethical and may jeopardize an ongoing investigation," it says.

The adoption of guidelines was first reported in the Daily News.

Arsenal's Diaby out for 9 months with knee injury

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 3:58 p.m. ET March 28, 2013

LONDON (AP) -Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is facing up to nine months on the sidelines to recover from a knee complaint, the latest in a long line of injuries to have plagued the France international.

Diaby tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at a training session on Wednesday.

"Following consultations with specialists, Abou will undergo surgery to repair the injury in the near future," Arsenal said Thursday. "Abou is expected to be out for around eight to nine months."

Diaby has been blighted by injuries since joining from Auxerre in 2006, fracturing and dislocating an ankle after four months at the Premier League club. The commanding midfielder made only 27 Premier League appearances during the next two seasons.

He eventually established himself as a regular in Arsenal's midfield, scoring seven times in 40 matches in all competitions in 2010-11.

But he was restricted to only five appearances last season due to a string of injuries, including ankle and calf problems, and has played only 16 games in the current campaign.

The latest problem adds to manager Arsene Wenger's mounting injury problems.

Jack Wilshere is recovering from an ankle problem which has ruled him out since the loss at Tottenham on March 3.

Wenger must also do without forward Theo Walcott against Reading this weekend after he returned home early from England duty with a pelvic injury, while defender Kieran Gibbs is doubtful because of a virus.

Arsenal is fifth in the league, four points behind Tottenham in the fourth Champions League place.

TSX advances as energy shares, BlackBerry drive gains

    By John Tilak

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index closed higher on Monday, helped by gains in the energy sector and a 14 percent jump in BlackBerry shares on takeover speculation and U.S. market launch plans.

BlackBerry shares gained after U.S. wireless carrier AT&T Inc said it would start selling the highly anticipated BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen smartphone to customers by March 22, with early sales of the devices to begin on Tuesday.

Comments from the head of China's Lenovo Group Ltd , who said the personal computer maker might consider an acquisition of Canada's BlackBerry in the future, also fueled the gains.

"Hope springs eternal that it's going to be the turnaround story," said John Ing, president of Maison Placements Canada.

"It's a typical momentum stock, and right now the mo' is going on the upside."

BlackBerry's stock climbed to C$15.29, helping the information technology sector rise 3.7 percent.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> unofficially closed up 22.88 points, or 0.18 percent, at 12,858.49. Six of the 10 main sectors on the index were higher.

The energy sector gained 0.3 percent. Suncor Energy Inc , Canada's largest energy company, was up 0.4 percent to C$31.58.

Financials, the index's weightiest sector, added 0.2 percent, with Royal Bank of Canada up 0.4 percent at C$62.65.

Investors also tracked data from China that showed inflation at a 10-month high in February, and that factory output and consumer spending were weaker than forecast. Imports were also surprisingly weak, falling 15.2 percent from a year earlier to 13-month lows and highlighting vulnerability in the economy.

"With weaker imports, that's a reflection that perhaps they're entering into a stage of destocking, or the economic activity continues to moderate," said Philip Petursson, managing director, portfolio advisory group, at Manulife Asset Management.

"The marginal demand for commodities comes from China," he added. "If we start to see that demand slow down, that will have a negative impact on commodity prices and, as such, a negative impact on commodity producers."

In company news, Aeterna Zentaris Inc said it would discontinue a late-stage trial of a cancer drug after an independent data safety monitoring committee said the drug was unlikely to help increase patient survival. The drugmaker's stock fell 22 percent to C$2.09.

Kenyan church moves past painful election history

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The Rev. Joshua Kimuyu pointed where his church floor is broken and black, a scar from an attack five years old. More than 200 young men armed with crude weapons stormed the Africa Inland Church in Nairobi's sprawling Kibera slum and set a generator on fire.

The explosion tore through the roof, creating one of the most visible scenes of postelection violence after Kenya's disputed election of 2007.

The dark spot is a constant reminder of the church's vulnerability during national elections. But for Kimuyu there was no question of keeping its doors shut this Sunday, the day after Kenya's election commission announced the winner of the East African country's fiercely contested presidential election. This time, Kimuyu said, there was nothing to fear after the two leading candidates ?winner Uhuru Kenyatta and loser Raila Odinga ?pleaded for calm and unity.

"When presidential candidates spoke to the media, they kind of fueled the steam in the people," he said, looking back on the disputed election of 2007, when more than 1,000 people died in tribe-on-tribe violence. But this time, although the election was hotly contested and close, the candidates urged Kenyans to respect authority, and that appears to have made a difference, said Kimuyu.

Sunday was a day of peace in Kenya. No violence was reported. Only the most minor of disturbances were reported late Saturday in the hours after Kenyatta was named the winner.

Odinga, who called the election "tainted," vowed to press a case of election irregularities with the Supreme Court. But he asked that Kenyans love one another and remain at peace.

The election commission said Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's founding father, won last Monday's vote with 50.07 percent of ballots. Kenyatta stands accused by the International Criminal Court of helping direct some of the 2007-08 postelection violence in which tribes attacked each other with machetes and bows and arrows and the police shot protesters.

Five years ago, President Mwai Kibaki was hurriedly sworn in for a second term, even as Odinga said the election had been stolen. His supporters took to the streets.

At the time, the Africa Inland Church was targeted because it was believed to be patronized by the Kamba tribesmen of Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, whose willingness to serve in Kibaki's government was seen as a betrayal by the opposition.

In the wake of the 2007-08 violence Kenyans passed a new constitution. That document says that President-elect Kenyatta cannot be sworn in before the court rules on the petition Odinga says he will file. If the court rules that Kenyatta did not cross the 50 percent mark, then Kenyans will vote in a run-off election between the top two finishers.

For Kimuyu this is tremendous progress from five years ago, when Odinga called for mass action.

"I think this is one of the things that have changed since the last election," Kimuyu said. "Odinga is an advocate of the new constitution."

In the run-up to this election, clerics and activists held rallies that preached peace and unity no matter the election result. That investment seems to have paid off, with some of the most hardened Odinga supporters saying he should concede for the sake of the country.

In the Kibera slum, an Odinga stronghold that saw some of the worst violence after the 2007 election, residents went about their business on Sunday morning. Stalls were open, and some young men even seemed more animated by European football than by the outcome of the election. In Kimuyu's church a choir sang as he got ready to deliver a sermon that he said would focus on what it means to be a responsible, lawful citizen.

"We never talk politics here," said Ericson Munyao, a long-time member of the church who was among the first to witness the 2008 attack. "We just tell them to vote wisely, not who to vote for. We simply preach peace."

Global Warming Heat Absorbed Mostly by Oceans Not Air, reports Dana Nuccitelli at Skeptical Science. Although air temperature appears stable for the past decade, data indicate that 90% of the extra heat goes into the oceans covering most of the planet. Meanwhile, short-term effects that dampen air absorption can fool many into thinking no warming is occurring at all. Remember, folks, it's that extra oceanic surface heat that fuels storms like Hurricane Sandy, among other myriad effects...
