Have you ever found yourself in self-improvement mode even when everything seems to be going smoothly to all of those around you?

I suspect that has been the case for me for years. I never seem to be satisfied with the current situation, there always seems to be room for improvement.

Gretchen Rubin?s The Happiness Project is a great example of this, which is probably why I enjoyed reading it most. I read it in fits in starts, but this books can be put down and picked back up without much problem.

The highlights of the books for me were:

1. Twelve Commandments ? a set of rules to remind herself of the most important things to live by
2. Enjoy now (March/Work) ? trying to enjoy the process of the now, rather than looking to when it?s done how happy I will be, and what the next big thing will be
3. Take Time for Projects (April/Lighten Up) ? setting aside time to focus on projects I?ve been putting on the backburner
4. Go Off the Path (May/Play) ? be willing to be distracted by something new and interesting along the way
5. Make Three New Friends (June/Friends) ? in every new situation, attempting to engage with and befriend new people
6. Forget About Results (September/Books) ? reading what I want and how I want without any particular purpose except to enjoy reading

Intuit shows off MicroMint concept app for the WIMM One smartwatch, we go hands-on

Given the amount of time we spent with the WIMM One smartwatch, you'd think we would have had enough fodder for a full-blown review. Alas, though, one critical piece was missing: apps. Not test apps, like a balance ball game, but honest to goodness apps from major third-party developers. As it happens, the app store still isn't live yet, but we did get to check out a concept app from Intuit, the company behind Mint.com (no TurboTax for this 1.41-inch display, sorry).

What can we say? When a device has a screen this tiny, the elevator pitch is going to be mighty brief. Here's how MicroMint works: just swipe left to right to see your balances for different accounts. There's no limit to how many it can display, and when you reach the end of the list, the app will just start cycling through again. As you can see in the video demo below, the app's performance is limited by the watch's 667MHz ARM11 CPU and 256MB RAM, which is to say you'll notice some lag as you swipe from one bank balance to another. And that's it. This is all the app does; don't expect to take advantage of Mint's other features, like budget-planning and mapping out savings goals (not that you'd want any graphs or itemized lists crammed onto that 160x160 screen).

For now, of course, this concept app is just that, a prototype. Intuit won't commit to releasing it, much less share any sort of timeline. Interestingly, though, David Siegel on Intuit's development team suggested to us that the app might be of more use when WIMM releases its next-gen watch with NFC. With that radio on board, he says, the app could potentially allow not just for balance-checking, but credit card payments as well. Additionally, the outfit is mulling a similar app for the Sony SmartWatch, which also runs Android and supports Java-based apps. The only development hiccup, he says, would be adapting the app for Sony-specific APIs. That's a whole lot of ifs for one paragraph, though, so for now we'll leave you with a super quick hands-on video, just past the break.

Fire breaks out on Azamara Quest

A fire broke out in Azamara Quest's?engine room Friday as the ship was steaming for Malaysia.

According to a statement from the line posted on its Facebook page, the conflagration started at approximately 8:19 p.m. ship's time (8:19 a.m. EDT) while Quest was en route from Manila, Philippines, to Sandakan, Malaysia.

The line says the fire was contained to the engine room and quickly extinguished. The ship, however, is currently running on generator power until full power can be restored to the engine room.

There are no reported passenger injuries, and Azamara described the mood onboard as "calm."

Still, "in an abundance of caution," said the statement, "the Captain initially mustered all [passengers] at their assembly stations." Cruise Critic has reached out to the line for additional details; we'll keep you posted.

Quest is currently on a 17-night sailing that departed Hong Kong, China, on Monday, March 26, and includes port calls to Manila, Philippines; Sandakan (Sabah), Malaysia; Palapo (Sulawesi), Benoa (Bali), Semarang and Komodo, Indonesia and concludes in Singapore?on Thursday, April 12.

Engineered humans: Climate change solution?

So far, conventional solutions to global warming ? new government policies and changes in individual behavior ? haven't delivered. And more radical options, such as pumping sulfur into the atmosphere to counteract warming, pose a great deal of risk.

There may be another route to avoid the potentially disastrous effects of climate change : We can deliberately alter ourselves, three researchers suggest.

Human engineering, as they call it, poses less danger than altering our planet through geoengineering, and it could augment changes to personal behavior or policies to mitigate climate change, they write in an article to be published in the journal Ethics, Policy and the Environment.

"We are serious philosophers, but we might not be entirely serious that people should be doing this," said Anders Sandberg, one of the authors and an ethicist at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. "What we are arguing is we should be taking a look at this, at the very least." [ Save the Planet? 10 Bizarre Solutions ]

Their suggestions
In their article, they put forward a series of suggestions, intended as examples of the sorts of human engineering measures that people could voluntarily adopt. These include:

• Induce intolerance to red meat (think lactose intolerance), since livestock farming accounts for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions.
• Make humans smaller to reduce the amount of energy we each need to consume. This could be done by selecting smaller embryos through preimplantation genetic diagnosis, a technique already in use to screen for genetic diseases. "Human engineering could therefore give people the choice between having a greater number of smaller children or a smaller number of larger children," they write.
• Reduce birthrates by making people smarter, since higher cognitive ability appears linked to lower birthrates. This could be achieved through a variety of means, including better schooling, electrical stimulation of the brain and drugs designed to improve cognitive ability, they propose.
• Treat people with hormones, such as oxytocin, to make us more altruistic and empathetic. As a result, people would be more willing to act as a group and more sensitive to the suffering of animals and other people caused by climate change.

Engineering the Earth
Frustration with the gap between measures to address climate change and rising greenhouse gas emissions has prompted a colorful array of geoengineering, or planet-altering, solutions. These include pumping sulfur particles or other aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect the sun's warmth back out into space; seeding the oceans with iron to prompt algal blooms that would, in theory, suck carbon out of the atmosphere and eventually tuck it away in the seafloor; and perhaps most realistically, pumping the excess carbon into reservoirs and storing it there.

In general, these solutions are problematic because they cannot be ground-tested before being implemented, and once implemented, the effects would be global, according to Sandberg.

"If I want to test out one of those brain-enhancing devices, I can test it on medical students. If something goes wrong, I might get a lawsuit, but it is a localized problem. How do you test geoengineering ?" Sandberg said. "How many Earths do we have to test on?"

What's more, a change that benefits one country may hurt another, he said.

The concept of human engineering isn't new. Sandberg studies the ethics of human enhancement, or "all the tools we have to mess with ourselves to improve our performance," as he puts it. "A lot of them are quite controversial, except the ones we don't recognize," he told LiveScience.

"Someone will tell you, 'I think it's horrible people take pills to become smarter,' but they are saying it over coffee," he said alluding to the alertness-enhancing effects of caffeine in the coffee. Supplementing salt with iodine is credited with preventing brain damage in infants, and as a result, boosting intelligence around the world.

Fluoride is put into water systems to protect our teeth, and we receive vaccines to protect against disease. Both measures ? just like human engineering measures that could address climate change ? carry risk, but they have been widely adopted, Sandberg and his colleagues point out.

"Now, we are not that interested in saying the government should impose any of this stuff. ? It is more interesting to think about what can people actually do to modify themselves that might be green," he said. "I am mildly skeptical if anything we propose is going to happen. I think it's most likely green changes to human nature aren't anything we have thought of."

Take back the backyard | House Party Blog

My line of thinking about yard work had always been to keep it simple and ?let nature take care of it.? Pushing mowers, raking leaves and pulling weeds was not my idea of weekend fun. I was fine letting the elements take care of my yard. Unfortunately, the elements were beginning to take over?and it showed.

• My wife?s complaining about it did nothing to change my point of view
• The kids begging me to trim a little so they could play out back made me laugh
• The fact that the dog refused to go in the grass didn?t faze me in the least

But what changed my mind about yard work was a picture. A picture left on the kitchen counter. One my wife took in our backyard.

That's MY backyard?!

That?s where I saw it ? my inspiration ? tucked away beyond the growing weeds, branches and tall grass, she had somehow found a little oasis that looked so beautiful, I had to ask her where she was when she took it.

When she told me it was our backyard ? at first I didn?t believe her ? then I had to go see for myself. And I began to see my yard in a different light and took great reverence in what I had and began to care for it like my neighbors did with pulsing mowers and humming leaf blowers.

And alas, my spring cleaning ritual started and has remained every year since seeing that picture. If you?re like me and are trying to return to yard work after a bit of a hiatus, here are my recommendations for getting back into it:

Go bagless
Find a place where yard waste can go back into nature and not into a bag. Choose a corner of your yard or a stretch of woods to dump it to make clean up much faster.

Grass was made for mulching
Get a mulching blade for your lawnmower and don?t even think about collecting grass in a bag.

OCD and spring cleaning don?t mix
Every leaf and branch does not have to be picked up for your yard or garden to look great. Do your best to get what you can quickly and easily, but don?t obsess.

Define boundaries
You might have trouble figuring out where a garden is, was or should be, but figure that out first if you?re planning on having one.

Celebrate your yard
Enjoy your yard and hard work with a picnic table, a simple and great way to enjoy it. You may even want to define an outdoor picnic area if your yard allows for it.

Pope addresses throngs in Havana, urges freedoms for Church

HAVANA (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, speaking from Cuba's biggest stage, urged Cubans on Wednesday to search for "authentic freedom" as their country changes and pressed the island's communist government to give the Catholic Church more liberties, including the right to teach religion in schools and run universities.

The 84-year-old pope celebrated an open-air Mass for some 300,000 people in Havana's Revolution Square, the centerpiece of a trip that began with a blast at communism and will end with a visit with Fidel Castro.

Crowds began gathering during the night to hear the leader of the world's 1.2 billon Catholics speak in the sprawling plaza that Castro, 85, used to fill with big crowds and fiery revolutionary rhetoric in hours-long speeches.

Surrounded by ten-story high images of Castro's revolutionary comrades Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, the pope read a sermon that continued one of the main themes of his trip - that Cuba should build a more open society, based on truth, justice and reconciliation.

"The truth is a desire of the human person, the search for which always supposes the exercise of authentic freedom," he said.

In an apparent dig at Marxism, the pope also said some "wrongly interpret this search for the truth, leading them to irrationality and fanaticism; they close themselves in 'their truth,' and try to impose it on others."

Hours before the Mass began, the area was filled with people waving Cuban flags and wearing broad hats and holding umbrellas to shield them from the sun. They wildly welcomed the successor of the much-beloved Pope John Paul, who made a historic, groundbreaking trip to Cuba in 1998 and preached from the same square.

Benedict, wearing purple vestments, read out a virtual shopping list of rights the Church still lacked in Cuba as President Raul Castro, Fidel's younger brother, sat in the front row. Both of the Castro brothers were educated by Jesuits, the worldwide Catholic order.

"To carry out this duty, she must count on basic religious freedom, which consists in her being able to proclaim and to celebrate her faith also in public, bringing to others the message of love, reconciliation and peace which Jesus brought to the world," he said.

While Benedict acknowledged "with joy" the great improvements since John Paul's visit, he added: "Nonetheless, this must continue forwards, and I wish to encourage the country's government authorities to strengthen what has already been achieved and advance along this path of genuine service to the true good of Cuban society as a whole."

The faithful could be "at once a citizen and a believer", the pope assured the government, adding that strengthening religious freedom consolidates social bonds and lays the groundwork for securing the rights of future generations.

"This is why the Church seeks to give witness by her preaching and teaching, both in catechesis and in schools and universities," he said.

Since his arrival in the eastern city of Santiago, the pontiff has spoken of Cuba's need for reconciliation and a more open society, with the Church at its side as a buffer against "trauma" or social upheaval.

"We hope he brings peace, and to wars, and an end to the US embargo," said Belkis Martin Rodriguez, 49, walking to Revolution Square dressed in jean shorts, with her mother and 8-year-old son.

Asked if she hoped the visit would bring reconciliation between the communist government, dissidents and exiles in Miami, she said: "Let each remain in their own place. If people left for Miami, let them stay there and be happy. Let the Church stick to its own field, religion, and let the government handle the politics."

In talks on Tuesday with Raul Castro, the pope urged a bigger role for the Church and asked that the government consider making Good Friday, the day Christians commemorate Christ's death, a national holiday. Good Friday is less than two weeks away.

Fidel Castro reinstated Christmas as a holiday ahead of the landmark visit of John Paul that helped improve long-strained Church-state relations.

The Vatican during Tuesday's meetings also made several "humanitarian requests," without giving details but possibly having to do with political prisoners or jailed American contractor Alan Gross, who is serving a 15-year sentence for illegally installing Internet networks on the communist-run island.

Fidel Castro said on Tuesday in one of his columns, or "Reflections," published on the Internet that he would meet briefly with the German pope before he returns to Rome.

"With pleasure, I will greet His Excellency Pope Benedict XVI as I did with John Paul II," wrote Castro, who is now mostly retired but still occasionally writes columns and meets with visiting leaders.

He said he decided to request "a few minutes of his very occupied time when I learned from the mouth of our Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez that modest and simple contact would please (the Pope)," Castro said.

The meeting of two octogenarian world figures with widely divergent political views would be another high point in what has been a more eventful papal trip than many had expected.

At a time when Church-state relations are the warmest they've been since the 1959 revolution, Benedict has not been afraid to poke the Cuban government in some sensitive places.

On the flight to Mexico beginning his trip on Friday, the pope said communism "does not correspond with reality" and that Cuba needs a new economic model.

Upon his arrival, he made thinly-veiled references to Cuban dissidents, political prisoners, Cuban exiles and asked the island's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, "to guide the future of this beloved nation in the ways of justice, peace, freedom and reconciliation."

His Monday evening mass in Santiago began with a man in the crowd shouting "down with communism" and being hustled off by security agents.

President Castro has launched economic changes aimed at strengthening communism for the future, but Marino Murillo, a vice president in the Council of Ministers and the country's economic reforms czar, made it clear that change to Cuba's one-party political system is not in the works.

"In Cuba there won't be political reform," he said at a news conference at Havana's Hotel Nacional, the international press center for the pope visit. "We are talking about the update of the Cuban economic model to make our socialism sustainable."

Murillo said the government welcomed all ideas, but would not allow them to be imposed on the country.

In response, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said "the Church is not trying to impose solutions. We know it is a long road and that the history of Cuba is complex."

1. Avoid over bathing

It is important to keep your skin clean, but over bathing can strip your skin of its natural moisture. Limit the amount of time spent in the bath and make sure water temperature is medium, not hot.

2. Apply moisturizer frequently

Consider purchasing a day cream, night cream and body lotion. No matter what, make sure your moisturizer of choice is non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, salicylate free and paraben free.

3. Use a mild soap and a gentle facial cleasner

Use a hypoallergenic soap and a facial cleanser that is free of sodium lauryl sulfate. Consider a cleanser that includes special emollients, which refresh and condition your skin without a greasy residue.

4. Limit or avoid contact with irritants

Irritants include anything that will upset your skin, such as perfume and detergents. Sensitive skin and hypoallergenic detergents should be used at all times. Likewise, if you wear makeup, be sure that it is not only hypoallergenic but also Salicylate Free.

5. Try various stress management techniques

If stress is a trigger of your eczema, be sure to engage in stress management techniques. Some great stress management techniques include exercise, yoga, acupuncture and meditation.

6. Avoid foods that cause an allergic reaction

Common food allergens are a frequent tipper for the most common kind of eczema, atopic eczema. Steer clear of eggs, milk, soybeans, salicylate, fish, and gluten if you notice a correlation.

7. Use a humidifier in both winter and summer.

The moisture that humidifiers add to the air combats the effects of dry air. Combating the effects of dry air can help lower the chances that eczema will appear.

The bottom line of these recommendations is practice good skin hygiene even when you are not having symptoms. If eczema does arise, speak with your doctor about the right treatment for you. A specific treatment will be prescribed for you based on your age, the type of eczema and the severity of the condition. Some possible treatment options you doctor may recommend are as follows:

1. Keep skin well hydrated at all times

Drink a lot of water, apply a sodium lauryl sulfate free moisturizer, and Emu oil, which is non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and salicylate free.

2. Apply emollient creams after a bath in order to seal in moisture

Emollient creams help moisture and refresh the skin, which will help ease the symptoms of eczema.

3. Use corticosteroid creams to reduce inflammation

Corticosteroid creams, such as hydrocortisone, betametasone, fluticasone and mometasone, may be prescribed by your doctor to reduce the inflammatory reaction.
