JOHANNESBURG (AFP) ? South African literary classic "Jock of the Bushveld" has been turned into the country's first 3D animation film and features the voices of global celebrities like Bryan Adams and Desmond Tutu.

The film, which opens Friday in southern Africa, is based on the 1907 bestseller by Percy Fitzpatrick who details his true-life bush adventures during the 1880s gold rush with his pup Jock, who became a national icon.

"Everyone loves dogs, it's an inspiring story," said director Duncan MacNeillie.

The book traces Jock's transformation from a sickly Staffordshire Bull Terrier pup to a brave companion in the wildlife-rich Eastern Transvaal, now called Mpumalanga.

MacNeillie had brought Jock to the big screen with a 1986 movie that made a splash in South Africa but ignored everywhere else due to the cultural boycott of the prevailing apartheid regime.

More than two decades later, he has resurrected the story as feature-length cartoon complete with musical score and 3D technology to capture the vibrant South African bush, and to appeal to children around the world.

"It's still based from the classic," he said. "It's from the dog's point of view... There is a happy ending and good inspiration."

The film drew top names with the narrator "Fitz" voiced by Donald Sutherland, Oscar-winner Helen Hunt playing Jock's mother, and South Africa's "white Zulu" singer Johnny Clegg and English lyricist Tim Rice working on the music.

Global peace icon Tutu voices a wise African "Tata", which means "father" in South Africa, and his involvement led to Canadian rocker Adams' signing up to play the brown-coated, white-socked lead.

"I went down to Cape Town to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who has a small voice segment in the film," said MacNeillie.

"When I got there, there was Bryan Adams sitting in Tutu's home having tea."

The film tells the story through the eyes of Jock, who remains a puppy through to the end, sparing him the book's harshest knocks: he does not go hunting with his owner, does not lose his hearing after a kick from a kudu, and does not die at the end.

Instead, a French girlfriend and a best friend rooster voiced by sitcom Cheers star Ted Danson have been added, and Jock's escapades even involve an unlikely disco with dancing warthogs and baboons in an abandoned mine.

The film took five years to create by a small team in Johannesburg.

"We did not want it to be just a prettified, generic outdoor African setting. We were very careful not to make it look like Disney's The Lion King," said MacNeillie, who himself lives in the region where the film is set.

But the producers have clearly borrowed a page from Disney's marketing techniques, with a raft of merchandising already flooding South African stores, which should help the film turn a profit.

Marketing manager Andy Rice said the movie was "an opportunity to bring South Africa on the 3D map".

"It's all about courage, faith, self-confidence, believing in oneself," he said.

While the budget is confidential, a spokeswoman estimated it to be roughly 10 percent of a typical animated production.

The film has been made for export and has been sold to a Hollywood-based marketing and distribution and when asked the desired target, MacNeillie simply summed up: "The world!"

Housing bust, recession hit minorities hardest: study (Reuters)

PHOENIX (Reuters) ? Victor Castro Jr. grew up in a modest, three-bedroom house in the heart of a middle-class neighborhood in suburban Phoenix.

But when his father lost his job three years ago in the recession and their property's value plunged, the Castro family had to walk away from the cherished home where they had lived for 12 years.

"You don't realize how much a house can mean to you," said Castro, a professional boxer, who turned 19 years old on Sunday. "There were so many memories."

The Castro family are among U.S. Hispanics and other minorities whose wealth slipped further behind that of white households during the recent housing crash and economic slump, according to a study released on Tuesday.

The Pew Research Center found whites' median wealth was a record 20 times that of black households and 18 times that of Hispanics in 2009 -- the largest gap in the 25 years the government has been keeping records.

The report, based on Census Bureau figures from 2009, said the inflation-adjusted median net worth of Hispanics plunged by 66 percent from 2005 to 2009, when the housing crisis and recession battered the country.

Black households' wealth, meanwhile, plunged by 53 percent during the same period.

That compared to a 16 percent drop among white households, researchers said.

"Everyone took a hit as measured by their net worth, it's just that Hispanics and blacks took a bigger hit than whites and fell farther behind ... than at any time in recorded history," said Rakesh Kochhar, one of the report's authors.

The typical black household had $5,677 in wealth in 2009, Hispanics had $6,325 and whites registered $113,149. Wealth was calculated as assets minus debts.

Kochhar said the housing bust was the biggest single reason for the heavy knock taken by minorities. Particularly vulnerable were Hispanics living in states with large minority populations including Arizona, California and Florida, which were also hit-hard by the foreclosure crisis.

"They are much, much more likely to be living in areas that went on that roller coaster ride with price increases and big price decreases," he said.

Kochhar also said the equity in a home generally accounts for a larger share of the net worth of Hispanic and black households.

"They don't have too much in terms of financial assets, so they were more dependent on the housing market," he said.

Although Castro's family have been floored by the recession and now live in a rented apartment, the junior welterweight said they remained determined to pick themselves up again.

"We all have our ups and downs, but it's how you fight back that matters," said Castro, who turned professional two months ago. "We won't be down for long."

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? Nokia Siemens Networks (NOKI.UL) said it will still build a core network for telecom start-up LightSquared, despite speculation their deal will be called off after a new pact between LightSquared and U.S. carrier Sprint Nextel (S.N).

A spokesman for Nokia Siemens said the company would deliver an independent core network for LightSquared, but declined to say how much of the original contract would remain.

Last July the company unveiled an eight-year contract worth more than $7 billion -- covering core network, radio network and services -- which analysts said might be the largest order seen in the mobile telecoms gear industry.

Nokia Siemens was expected to lose most of that deal due to a new pact between LightSquared, which is backed by Philip Falcone's Harbinger Capital hedge fund, and Sprint. The U.S. firms confirmed the $9 billion deal on Thursday.

Sprint also has a major outsourcing deal with NSN's bigger rival Ericsson (ERICb.ST), which was valued at $5 billion when it was signed in 2009.

Pelosi calls for ethics probe into Wu sex report (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has requested an ethics panel investigation of Rep. David Wu over a woman's reported accusation that she had an "unwanted sexual encounter" with the Oregon Democrat last year.

Pelosi issued a statement Sunday night calling on the Republican-led House's "Ethics Committee to initiate an investigation into the allegations against Congressman Wu."

Wu and Pelosi had a telephone conversation Saturday but neither politician has disclosed any details.

Despite calls for his resignation, Wu kept publically silent Sunday. But The Oregonian posted a Washington-dated story on its website late Sunday with a senior Democrat official, who wasn't further identified, confirming to the paper that Wu said he would not resign but would complete his term and retire in 2012.

The comment was similar to a report in Washington-based Politico, which quoted an unnamed adviser to Wu as saying he wouldn't run next year but had done nothing that rises to the level of a resignation.

Wu's spokesman Erik Dorey declined to comment on the Politico report. He also said he couldn't respond immediately to Pelosi's call for a probe, but that Wu might make a statement Monday.

A Democrat who has challenged Wu in next year's primary, state Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, said Wu should see Pelosi's calls for an ethics investigation as a signal to step down immediately.

"An ethics investigation would result in a long drawn-out distraction and prolong the public pain" for the unidentified woman who has accused Wu, Avakian said through his spokesman, Jake Weigler. "For the sake of our community and this young woman and her family, as well as his own family, David Wu should do the right thing and step aside now."

Another Wu challenger in the Democratic primary, state Rep. Brat Witt, said an ethics investigation is needed so "we get to the bottom of the allegations and determine what the facts are."

Wu's only response so far has been a brief statement late Friday: "This is very serious, and I have absolutely no desire to bring unwanted publicity, attention or stress to a young woman and her family."

Oregon Democrats have been waiting for word on how Wu plans to respond further to the allegation and the resignation calls.

Spokesmen for both Gov. John Kitzhaber and the statewide party organization said Wu hadn't reached out to top Democrats in Oregon.

"At this point, I don't believe those conversations have happened," said Trent Lutz, executive director of the state party.

Lutz and other party members said they hoped Wu would respond directly to the allegation reported by the Oregonian newspaper. The paper quoted sources who said a young woman left voicemail at Wu's Portland office earlier this year accusing him of an unwanted sexual encounter three weeks after last year's election.

Citing anonymous sources, The Oregonian reported that Wu told senior aides that the sexual encounter with the young woman in California was consensual. The paper reported Facebook notes indicate she graduated from high school in 2010 and that she registered to vote in California last August.

The paper said the woman decided not to press changes because there were no witnesses and it would have been her word against Wu's.

The newspaper said its information came from multiple sources familiar with the allegation.

In Wu's district stretching from downtown Portland to the Pacific Ocean in northwest Oregon, county-level leaders said they, too, were hoping for more from Wu.

"I'm waiting for more details to come out," said Cris Land, party chair in Columbia County.

The heart of the 1st Congressional District is Washington County, a center of high tech and suburban development and the home of David Robinson, a former Navy officer and municipal official who lost by a margin of 4-1 to Wu in the Democratic primary last year. Wu faces primary challengers next year, as well.

Robinson said Sunday he will ask fellow activists in Washington County on Wednesday to approve a vote of no confidence in Wu, calling the woman's allegation "just another in a long line of disappointments and improprieties."

Wu has won seven terms. In 2004, he won despite acknowledging a decades-old college incident in which he tried to force a former girlfriend to have sex. Voters said they disliked an opponent's attempt to use that against Wu.

In January this year, seven staffers resigned because of behavior that included sending a photo of himself in a tiger costume to a staff member and an angry public speech. Wu attributed those to a period of mental health challenges that began in 2008 as marital issues led to separation from his wife.
