George Clooney Arrested in Sudanese Protest

George Clooney was arrested this morning outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The actor was taking part in an organized demonstration to draw attention to that country's president, Omar al-Bashir, who is responsible for countless deaths in the region due to his blockade of humanitarian aide.

Clooney - who has traveled to the country and said in the past we're going to face a genocide if action isn't taken - testified before Congress on Wednesday regarding the "campaign of murder" in that nation.

"This is for the government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them and stop starving them. That's all we ask," USA Today quotes Clooney as saying after he was handcuffed and taken away today, following repeated warnings to leave the area.

Along with his father; U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (Dem.) of Virginia; NAACP President Ben Jealous and others, Clooney was placed in a Secret Service and has been charged with the misdemeanor of disorderly crossing a police line. Said the star's rep:

"They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world."
